CNN anchor Carol Costello asked professor Cornel West and journalist Tavis Smiley if poor people are actually living well and if we can partly blame them for the recession. Political comedians Jimmy Dore and Paul Gilmartin discuss.

1. Let's give the poor some money and then take it away just to
show 'em how good they've got it!

2. The poor have all America's money. Let's think about the logic of that statement for a second.

3. Classis blame the victim....
And they frame the question that way.

Back in the good old days, before teachers had to teach to a test, we had a section in English class on media and advertising. Of course we had real media covering real news and not ads and infomertials disguised as news at that time. Best valuable class I ever had-right up there with civics. Do they even teach civics any more?

An educated population is critical to democracy, as is a free press. If this is our example of a free press, it is not worth fighting and dying for!

7. This is very reminiscent of Hitlers Germany.
Find a scapegoat, the poor, the sick, and Jewish people. Honestly, how could a person who has ever lived and worked in America watch that "journalism" and not barf? It is when good people do nothing that these nazi's are able to take over.

4.  Carol Costello is a tool and an idiot.
I would absolutely love to see her lose her job and make way for a real journalist.

Not to mention: insufferably sanctimonious...

(I'd like to see her canvas the charity organizations in her neighborhood, looking for the $204 to pay her electric bill... oops, that's MY big condundrum this month, and I sure hope I don't get shut off in this record heat wave... yeah, WHAT am I complaining about?!?!)

5. Kicked and fucking recommended!
The point is these media talking heads don't even suspect the level of their own hypocrisy.

I'm watching it right now on C-Span's Washington Journal where the host is reading nearly an entire article from the Wall Street Journal. The media is controlled by those responsible for the problem.

25. "The media is controlled by those responsible for the problem."
exactly... and idiots on the right think the media is liberal... in what way? Ah, maybe culturally on the surface... yes, I'm sure they hate it when there is a show on tv depicting gays as average americans or that a woman character has a high profile position in a company... these people are cultists.

I think Carol Costello might be auditioning for the Onion News Network.

9. Oh yeah Carol. Damn those poor people for buying and selling all of those credit default swaps.
I'll bet they were the ones telling the rating agencies to grade those crap mortgage backed securities as AAA, too. And I know for a fact that they have been using their welfare checks to buy politicians.

13. Poor people aren't miserable enough so let's cut off their aid
Stories like this are designed to make viewers suspicious and angry at their neighbors so they don't focus their anger on those at the top who really oppress them.

14. It's a common right wing belief.
And like the rest of them, makes no fucking sense. I've heard a few say there are really not any poor people in America because they're all taken care of by the "Nanny State". I doubt those that live in countless tent cities that are springing up everywhere in America would agree.

The classic was Babs Bush saying how well Texas was working out for the poor displaces souls from NOLA after Katrina.

I'm still trying to figure out what a "compassionate conservative" is. Another right wing myth?

the poor corporations doing it. :hi:

18. Recession?!
For 2007-2010, real GDP decreased at an average annual rate of 0.3 percent; in the previously published estimates, real GDP had increased at an average annual rate of less than 0.1 percent.

This is current GDP Data, released at "8:30 A.M. EDT, FRIDAY, JULY 29, 2011BEA 11-38" by the US DOC, BEA. I copied the entire press release, fearing it would have a briefer lifespan than an ice cube in a forest fire. I have seen NOTHING about this data in the M$M or on either of the 'left-leaning' blogs I frequent. Not a SINGLE economist has acknowledged this data.

In other words, by definition, our nation has been in a depression these past four years. However, just as they did in the 80s, the Big Dogs in the financial arena are obfuscating and/or omitting key information, so that much of the citizenry remains deluded and/or uninformed.

Of note is the fact that our much vaunted financial 'experts' stopped using the word 'Panic' to define 'economic downturns' after the Knickerbocker Trust got it's knickers in a bunch...

19. I find it frighteningly amazing
that there are so many people that are so willing to give up what so many have worked so hard for to give us this
"middle class" way of life here in the US. It's as if there is something in the water (or on tv and radio) that is poisoning our minds and creating a population of pod people. Money is the only quest and if you don't have enough, it's the fault of those who have less than you that are the problem.
I scrape by and have a great life, am surrounded by people that scrape by and piss and moan and blame the ABSOLUTELY WRONG people for why this is.

BTW, I miss Paul Gilmartin (the guy on the left) on "Dinner and a Movie" and the pseudo right wing videos he put out a few years ago.

23. You don't HAVE to be a fascist to say or believe something like that... but it helps.
You could just be incredibly stupid.

(I would have liked to heard the answer West and Smiley gave her. It had to be good.)

26. She's the biggest airhead on CNN
Remember this clip from 2005 and Hurricane Katrina:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFAsyYnTkIw

The weatherman Chad Myers is trying to walk us through a very serious situation, and Costello is playing the bubbly, perky news anchor, like this is just another weather forecast.

27. This is what passes for journalism on CNN these days?
I really wouldn't know. Due to a medical bankruptcy I do not have a TV... or a cell phone, or a land-line. My food stamps have been cut. The price for my generic medication has just doubled. All I have left is this Internet connection which I'm clawing to hold on to. Oh... and the apartment in the house I live in which very well may be foreclosed on this winter. Yeah... it's all my fault I got sick and became poor. Multiple Sclerosis. All MY fault. F*** her!

The love for the rich in this country never ceases to amaze me. DOES THIS COUNTRY HAVE STOCKHOLME SYNDROME? Falling in love with our captors? Can we just stop giving everything to the affluent aholes already?
