- It's a good thing we live in a society where the market is "self-correcting."

2. Disgusting???
Well then........ Let's gut and trash every regulatory agency that the federal government wastes money on! Surely - without the threat of being investigated - these businesses will always shaf..... er, treat the consumer in upright fashion!

4. It must have been 18 years ago I had a friend take her van to Jiffy Lube for an oil change
before she took a trip to Kentucky from here in Wisconsin. She got a couple of hundred miles south when the van stopped running. When it was taken into the shop they found it had no oil in it. They refilled it with oil and ran it and could find no leaks.

The only answer was that Jiffy Lube did not put much oil into it at all which allowed it to be driven a couple of hundred miles until the engine got so hot that what little oil it had was burned away. Jiffy Lube denied that they were in any way responsible and she did not check her oil before she left because she had just had it changed the day before she left. The result was a mom on welfare with 2 little kids had to have a new engine put in her van and Jiffy Lube got away scott free.

I've been to a place which used the transmission fluid sucking machine, but at this place you stayed sitting in your car while any work was done so I watched them use the machine, change my oil, the show me the dipstick mark when they were finished indicating it was full.

10. dishonest, yet still preying on the unsuspecting
I got caught up in their profit game several years ago and thought I was OK because of their guarantee of service. They blew out my radiator during a flush and sent me off to one of their friends for repairs. I was then told that it was my fault and their worthless guarantee would not cover it. They tried to buy me off with a few discount coupons. I guess only really stupid people believe in what they are selling.

6. Not surprised, not surprised at all, never have trusted any of these
outfits - find a competent independent mechanic or do it yourself.

8. I use one of their locations outside of Orlando.
I have been there maybe 10 times and they treat me well, although one time I did get less than stellar service.
They replaced my windshield wipers and left one of the wipers inside the engine compartment.
I heard it rattling around, and I discovered it (and not only was it left behind, but it was one of the NEW wipers which means they left one old one on).
Next oil change was free.

First time I brought my vehicle to this location, I pulled the manager aside and I told him this...
"You FUCK with me, and I will drive my vehicle through the front door of this shop, and I will continue driving until I run over YOU. We have an understanding here?"
Of course being 6'4" and 280, I can get away with saying shit like that.

They do stellar work on my vehicle, minus the windshield wiper incident.

 :hi:

11. Over-selling is systematic in the oil change industry
as they make next to nothing on oil changes. If they charged enough to not have to try to sell you the extras, they'd go broke pretty fast too for lack of business. Market economy - that's just the way it is.

Other than that, it comes down to who does the work as to whether its done right or not. Everyone can make a mistake regardless of experience, but minimum wage guys with no experience make a lot more mistakes. Given that they make no money on oil changes, they also tend to hire guys with no experience, and pay them too little to keep them around once they have some experience. If they hired good mechanics, they'd have to charge more for oil changes, then they'd go broke again...

Best way to go is find a good mechanic who won't rob you or screw up your car, with a full service shop that does oil changes too. It might be a bit higher, and it might be done by a trainee, but it will probably be well a supervised trainee. Independent shops generally value their reputations enough to make sure things are done right.

12. This calls for a nationwide class action suit!
Oh wait, the SCOTUS has nixed that. Maybe that's why Jiffy Lube Corporate ignored the reporter's charges - no repercussions.

Here is a nationwide company that, even after being caught scamming American consumers, time-after-time, over many years and in many locations still continues its criminal practices (the police, when called, tell automotive scam victims that it's a civil not a criminal matter, then just walk away)
nearly unabated, because it is profitable to keep doing so.

THEY are why Americans NEED a national consumer protection agency -- one that oversees multiple kinds of consumer products and services - NOT just financial products. I wish on all the senators who keep quashing the appointment of a director for the new agency, and the Supremes, to be the victims of every scam that could have been stopped had this agency and nationwide class action suits been in place to protect all of us.

13. this is why we don't need government regulation... the free market is perfect
Edited on Thu Aug-04-11 02:23 AM by TheeHazelnut
Jiffy Lube has been driven out of business by lying and cheating and providing horrible service... NOT.

Libertarian and Republican idiots (and the Third Way Dems) want to leave us powerless to companies like this.
