In addition to the 2008 and 2009 increases, there was also a substantial increase in 2010. There were 499 US casualties throughout 2010, while there were 311 in 2009 (a 38% increase). This also rings true for US soldiers who were wounded in action. There were 5,182 WIA's in 2010, while there were 2,144 in 2009 (a 58% increase). Additionally, there have been 9,957 WIA's throughout the war, which means 74% of all WIA's in Afghanistan occurred in the past two years.
