When the going gets tough, America calls for action, leadership and complete meltdowns. Is Obama dropping the ball when it comes to expressing outrage, hysterics and feeling our pain?

If we can trust the press, then the general public is crying out for Obama to "feel their pain" with regard to the BP oil spill.

Do we really need rhetoric and tears or do we need action? Do we want a president who goes ballistic in times of crisis - or did we intentionally elect one who could remain cool, calm and collected in the face of disaster?

What's the DU opinion on this?

1. Great comment from caller on 'Talk of the Nation' today...
...reminded us that black children are taught to not show emotions.

3. Do you have a link for that?
I'd be interested in hearing it. I know from friends that black kids are taught to hold back around white people, if for nothing more than self preservation, but this sounds like a very broad classification that I'd like to hear more about.

2. Obama is capable of very motivational speeches
And I really wouldn't mind seeing him make one in this situation - the "kick some ass" comment just fell short of the leadership I want to see in this. Of course there would have to be something behind the speech.

4. Not sure if that's what people want..
..."something behind the speech". Is that what people want? And by "people" I don't mean intelligent people. Sheesh. Sometimes I wonder why people voted for Obama. Didn't they realize that he wasn't the kind of person who'd sound natural going on TV and talking about kicking ass? Yet that's all they seem to want him to do. I was embarrassed for him.

5. Are you embarrassed for him because he's caving into ...
... handlers who are trying to make him something that he's not? That bugs me ... and other videos on this site are making fun of it - and perhaps he deserves it. Bottom line is that we have a smart person in the Oval Office and it's been a while and the American public (and press) doesn't remember what that's like ... so they're trying to take him down for it.

6. I guess I'm despairing that...
...the days of great US presidents may be over. Radio didn't stop them from being great, and TV took the Oval Office down only a few notches. But the News-iverse we live in now may finally bring an end to the smartest guy in room having much effect on people.

Loved the video, btw. Is that a real nun?

8. Real nun, but not they type a Catholic would remember from grade school!
She's great. Probably can't promote here on DU, but if anyone is interested in her career they can Google Karol Jackowski.

7. I assume that when you speak of his "motivational speeches" ...
... you're not some kind of Tony Robbin's fanatic.

Anyway, my real point was to say welcome to DU. Kind of new around here too. Sometimes it's a bit rough, but you have a lot of fun and you're going to find some cool people.

I guess that's a little off topic, but I thought I'd say it anyway.
