With the Democrat-led push for healthcare reform in its final stages, Rep. Alan Grayson (D-FL) introduces “The Public Option Act,” a measure that would allow people under sixty-five to buy into Medicare. The bill has attracted fifty co-sponsors. Grayson joins us to discuss the measure and healthcare reform overall, his own family’s experience with private insurance companies and more.

1. The ultimate public referendum
I'd switch in a heartbeat. Tens of millions would as well. The morans that follow the Republican leadership (those folks in Congress who enjoy their taxpayer funded public health plan) can enjoy the crippling premium increases that will occur as fewer people are in the pool. I'd love to see a penalty added to people who might choose to buy in at a later date....pretty much all of the rubes and ding-dongs who listen to Glen beck and Rush and who have kept us from realizing this for decades.

3. Exactly!
Not only should EVERY Democrat in Congress co-sponsor this bill, but every Republican would too, if they were serious about 'consumer choice' that is.

If "gummint-run hellcare" is so horrible, no one will sign up, correct? I hope you in the states get this passed and show the Republicans to be the ciphers for the health insurance industry that they truly are.

Of course, the Republicans cannot do that. Their whole raison d'etre is that government is impotent and can do nothing right (except blow up Middle Easterners, of course). Getting a public option that works for patients AND doctors will kill off the corporate greed as the FACTS and TRUTH spread and the people kill them off of their own accord.

Here in Canada, our single-payer system is not "government-run". It is run by our physicians while a single risk pool of all Canadians pays the bills. Americans don't have a physician-run system. For that matter, they aren't even privately run! They are corporate oligopolies and only slightly less amoral than the Bloods and Crips. More dishonest, yes, but still less amoral, even if only just!

Democrats need to point out that single-payer isn't government-run but is funded by taxes and there are no-pays, no denials AND that as a result, there is less lawsuits, resulting in lower insurance rates and attorneys fees. This results in a net savings for your Average Joe. It also prevents people becoming a slave to their employers to avoid total financial ruin from sickness or injury.

Single-payer is physician-run, citizen-driven and it not only benefits our bottom line but our humanity as well!

6. I have a question on this - What will happen to the people on Medicaid & will there be enough Dr's?
Right now my son, who is on SSI in FL because of a chronic illness, has a very hard time getting competent Dr's who will take people on Medicaid and it is almost impossible to get good Neurologists & other Specialist who will take patients like him. How will this effect the chronically ill patients access to Dr's and/or will there be enough Dr's to go around?

Go here for a great chart to help explain the difference between Medicare and Medicaid:
