1. I saw this guy

in Burning the Future, and couldn't believe he is a Democrat.

4. i could be argued that he's not, really

1n 1996 Manchin lost the Democratic primary for governor to Charlotte Pritt, a populist progressive and former teacher.
Manchin refused to back her in the fall race agaisnt Republican Cecil Underwood, a former coal operator (who would go on to be the most extremist governor on the environment in WV history).

Many involved in his campaign formed "Democrats for Underwood" chapters and campaigned hard against Pritt. (with Manchin's blessing and support behind the scenes, as many here will tell you). They went around saying Pritt was 'too lib'rul" and smeared her in every way they could think of.
Manchin himself had nothing but praise for Underwood and nothing to say about Pritt.

Underwood ended up pulling off an upset against Pritt, thanks to Manchin and his political machine.

and it baffles me that manchin ended up, years later, getting picked to run the Democratic Governors association, given his record of working against electing Democrats to office.

so beware of this guy. he wants to follow Byrd in the Senate and the national party could have another Zell Miller in the making to deal with.

2. "We are a mountain state, not an extraction state."

Your governor gave me the creeps during the Sago Mine incident. I assume he was genuinely concerned about the miners' well being, but it felt he was seizing the photo op. (Then again, I felt the same about Bloomberg and Paterson following the US Airways plane landing on the Hudson......never mind).

In any case, Manchin needs to do some research.
