What was finally revealed was that the CIA had actively promoted the co-opting of print, radio, and teevee media personalities as informers who gathered information while they were on assignment. The corporate bosses who hired and fired the journalists of the day were also in the circle of the "chosen" who were allowed to be part of the intelligence elite who were secretly PROTECTING American interests.

Why did they sell out? For access. For prestige. For money. For being able to move in the "right" circles. In other words, mostly for ego.

oligarchy vs. rule by he plebians.

I guess that blip of anti-aristocratic fervor back in the late 18th century got the elites' attention. They learned how to camouflage their rule by making us THINK we were participating in our government.

And, of course, they pay their media shills very well for the work they do.
