This is one of the best ads the DNC has put out. When you see McCain on there saying we violated the Geneva Conventions... there's not much more to say.

Dick Cheney: Wrong Then, Wrong Now.

1. Scary to find myself agreeing with McCain.
But he's right this time.

5. McCain's harmless to the war criminals--by intent.
Edited on Wed Sep-02-09 03:10 PM by burning rain
He just says what he does to preen and pat himself on the back and embellish his fake reputation. The proof is in the pudding: his settling for a gutted anti-torture measure, and opposition to prosecution for torture. It's of a piece with his phony maverick image and "hip modern Republican" shtick from 2000--the media are my base.

6. Well, that is true, of course.
Naturally, I wish I was agreeing with him for saying "the Bush Administration should be thoroughly investigated and prosecuted" but this is the best anyone can get from him now. But perhaps the worm is turning. There may come a point when even Bush wants to distance himself from his presidency.

15. I feel ya.
I'm also glad Macaroon said what he did-- it gives us more leverage against Cheney et al. Just pointing out he has no good or noble motive--so I can't say I feel grateful to the self-serving git, even though I find what he said useful to our side.

4. Recently saw "A Few Good Men" on cable. Cheney is Jessup (Nicholson's character).
except for one thing: The big hairy deal everyone got exercised about in the film was Colonel Nathan Jessup ordered a Code Red on one poor Marine, who died. Cheney approved of and authorized torture of thousands of prisoners, dozens of whom died. Jessup got tripped up in court because, as Kaffee said, "he wants to say it. I think he's pissed off that he has to hide behind all this. I think he wants to say that he made a command decision and that should be the end of it."

Cheney's the same. He wants to boast that he ordered torture. He wants to do the whole Col. Jessup speech: "Son, we live in a world that has walls, and those walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Whose gonna do it? You? You, Lt. Weinburg? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Santiago, and you curse the marines. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That Santiago's death, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a weapon, and stand a post. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to."

9. That is the John McCain that I like
Poor guy was so schizo during the campaign trying to be everything to everyone, especially the far right idiots, he lost his bearing. Seems like he's trying to go back to his roots which are more center right.

10. I don't get it
Why is the DNC wasting time and money on paying attention to a political zombie like Cheney when there is a war for healthcare reform to be fought and won?

12. If only the DNC had fought like this in 2004...
They only needed some footage of 9/11, footage of Bush sitting in a classroom for 7 minutes, and footage of Bush saying he's hardly thinking about Bin Laden a half year later. Repeat that ad, and only that ad as much as you can and... Kerry would've been president.

17. Ha!
Well now that McCain is probably on Cheney's shit list, if Cheney runs for President (I read that somewhere) then McCain will probably become a Democrat and work hard to defeat Cheney, so that Cheney wouldn't have the power to 'take him out' ;)
