I have always liked "spinnen" and "durchdrehen" as words for indicating the loss of one's mind. "Tor" reminds me of a line from Goethe's "Faust" - the line is something like, "...armer Tor, nicht viel klueger als zuvor." Do you know any other German expressions for mental instability?

Er/sie ist nicht ganz sauber. In Bavaria there's a variation of this by replacing "sauber" with "Chappi". For those of you who don't know it, Chappi is a dog food brand, like Alpo, in Germany. It's nonsensical which makes it all the more effective.

"Verrückt" was always one of my favourite words. When you break it down, you see how subtly cool it is. The word "rücken" is akin to moving or pushing something. When you add the prefix "ver" you indicate that something has been moved or pushed to the wrong place. Now, attribute that to someone's mental state and you start to see the beauty of the word.

If they allow a nutbag wrapped in the flag to disrupt a signficant meeting, they should humor the group and go ahead with the Pledge of Allegiance, but then end the meeting immediately afterwards without another word being said.
