RNC Launches 'Daisy' Web Ad

May 21, 2009 9:34 PM

ABC News’ Rick Klein reports: Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele this week promised an aggressive new approach to opposing President Obama.

That starts now.

The RNC is launching a Web ad on Friday highlighting Democrats’ divisions over the future of Guantanamo Bay, ABC News has learned.

The ad intersperses video from one of the most famous and controversial political ads of all time -- Lyndon Johnson’s “Daisy” ad from the 1964 presidential campaign against Barry Goldwater.

“To close it? To close it not?” a voice asks several times, with video playing of the little girl from the LBJ ad.

The ad shows several clips of Democrats -- including Obama, Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. -- contradicting each other over what the fate of Guantanamo should be.

The Web ad fades with a single word on the screen: “Really?”

It does not include the famous mushroom cloud ending.

1. It's not patriotic to criticize the president
and I won't tolerate this slander from these Un-American traitors.

19. Think again... or at least start thinking.

Interesting that you say that. One of the greatest presidents to ever serve this country (key word is SERVE, remember you pay The Presidents wages... we all do) said something you should consider very carefully...

“To announce that there must be no criticism of the president is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonous to the American public.”
- Teddy Roosevelt

2. Oh that is so stupid
Most young people won't know what it refers to and they're the ones who voted Obama in. The people who do get it will think it's absurd to compare a U.S. federal prison to a nuclear bomb.

How do these people manage to run successful businesses.

3. It's really an inside type of ad and it really makes no sense to anyone
other than a small circle of friends.

9. Well, you may be wondering "why the ancient footage?" but otherwise,
it's your classic "Vote with us or terrorists will kill this kid" approach. And they know it.

But here's where it may backfire: Those who DO remember it will remember one thing about it: It went down in history as THE Great Fearmongering Ad that Exaggerated The Danger of the Opponent's Ideas. (And, as it so happens, Dems made it!)

Is that really what they want to be associated with?

All it does is make me think "So what they're saying is, if Gitmo is closed, some kid who was a little girl like me in 1964 will die. Is that it? Ummm...okay. Um, yeah."

Do they honestly not have anything else left? I mean, they are scraping the bottom of the barrel and coming up with wood shavings.

20. I will tell you how they run successful businesses...
By shitting on people and taking their money. Running a business today is not about providing quality goods and services its about selling the perception of quality so called "customer experience" or convincing people that their lives are somehow incomplete without such and such product while providing the bare minimum to sustain exorbitant profits.

4. Obama has no one to blame but himself.
Human rights, civil rights issues are pretty cut and dry. He's playing politics. He should go by his conscience and forget about counting votes.

Will there be another terrorist attack? Who knows? Will the placement of Guantanamo prisoners into highly secure American prisoners pose a risk? Who knows.

Will Obama's inability to adhere to the values of those who wrote the Constitution, those who gave birth to our country have serious and detrimental consequences on the future of our nation? Will the abuse of our rights and those of the prisoners in our care have serious consequences for our future as a nature? Does the torture and the illegal detention of the prisoners at Guantanamo and elsewhere in the world endanger us as a people? There can be no question. The answer to all of these questions an unequivocal "Yes."

Obama is endangering us with his disregard for human rights. If you doubt this, read the history of Stalinist Russia, of the NAZI Germany before and during WWII and of East Germany and other parts of Eastern Europe under the Communist regime. The repression of these regimes was not instituted in a single coup. It was introduced slowly but surely. Illegal and intrusive surveillance accepted by the people out of fear of some evil threat from political opposition, then the violation of the rights of minorities, not necessarily racial minorities, but certainly political minorities, then increasing surveillance, increasing fear and increasing repression. It is an age-old history.

Unless Obama finds the courage to stand up for human rights, we are witnessing the beginning of the end of our democratic society. For shame, President Obama. You know better. You taught Constitutional law. Or did you?

And if you doubt my view of history, study it for yourself.

10. Yeah, because Obama is so much a greater danger to our human rights than Bushco.
Yeah, I'll believe that one, sure, you betcha. :puke:

The man isn't doing everything I want him to do, no. He has a long ways to go. But he's still a vast improvement over what went before, and now he is our best hope standing up against it.

8. There's always Guam military base. We can call it 'Guamo'

I keep thinking if Obama is truly in 'campaign mode', he shouldn't have put his video response team to bed so early. Time for Plouff to resurrect the troops.

12. Only their base will think this is of interest and could only shrink them as they are reminded...
... think about the mushroom cloud and have heart attacks. They are going to have to stop frightening people soon - they are killing off their older party members. An old vote is still a vote - but a dead vote is forever.

16. That was pathetic.
If they were going to try that, then they should have had something scary at the end. The word "Really" will invoke hysteria for sure. *snort*
What you have there is a group of clips of people talking about Gitmo interspersed with BW clips of some kid pulling petals off of a flower. Did the terrorists give her drugs so that she is tripping? Unless you have a clue about the first ad, it makes no sense. Even if you do, it still doesn't make much.

17. That ad, back in '64, aired once, in limited markets and the outcry
from the GOP, and many D's was so loud that it was never shown again, except as a historical document. Odd how these days, the R's are so bereft of ideas, they have to dredge that old saw up. All they have/had is fear, nothing else. Even fear loses its edge in relatively short order.
