I think this was a deliberate attempt by Rove to paint Judge Sotomayor as 'not an American' - make no mistake, they will do anything to fight whomever they think they want to eliminate from contention. Rove is beneath the mud of politics - he is mudscum.

1. What a lying sack of s--t!
Not only does he cast a slur, he also lies about Obama's not having time to do his homework on judges. Guess he hasn't learned that Obama's transition team was looking at judges months ago. Rove is a spectacular piece of crap, whose grandiose plans for a permanent repig majority imploded. How's that working for you, Karl?

2. Sorry to disappoint you, but "Puerto Rican" is not a slur
From 30 Rock:

Jack: It's not because you're a... I'm sorry. What... do you call... yourself ?
Elisa: A Puerto-Rican.
Jack: No, I know you can say that but what do I call you?
Elisa: Puerto-Rican.
Jack: Wow. That does not sound right.

3. Not a slur, but used as one by many people...
The implication is that they are not really Americans.

12. Not in my experience, and that includes all the variations....
Edited on Sat May-02-09 01:54 PM by imdjh
... some of which are disapproved of. Puerto Rican, (dialect) porta ricken, PR, New York Rican, Negrican, etc... I've lived most of my life on the East Coast, and I'm aware of the racial issues in the places where there are large numbers of Puerto Ricans, but the designation itself is not something I see as insulting when used by average people, or in this case by Rove.

edit - Some Cuban Americans have a way of saying Puer-to Ree-can that leaves little to the imagination.

10. Thank you...
Rove certainly used the word as a slur: he intended to cast doubts on her as a true "American." I live in Texas, so I recognize what Rove is trying to do. I agree with the comment about being from Hawaii: remember when Cokie Roberts said Obama shouldn't vacation in Hawaii, as it was too exotic? She was not only trying to cast doubts on his authenticity, but also attempting to paint him as one of those gosh darn elites.

Thanks for the welcome: I've been reading DU for years, but I don't post much.

6. Rove should be in jail. Why is he being asked for his opinion?

7. Yes, Rove should be in jail.
But the question isn't why is he being asked for his opinion, but rather, why is anyone watching Faux.

13. Of course it's deliberate. I had hoped we would be rid of the bastard by now.
That he would at least just go away.

Time to go after him, Congress and the justice system. Enough.
