4. It will never be legalized until.....
The economic incentive for enforcement agencies, those companies who arm them, those companies who sell equipment, and those who have any financial gain in the criminalization of marijuana. Until all that happens it does not make any difference if marijuana is found to cure cancer, increase life expectancy, or helps New Orleans win a Super Bowl. Marijuana will never be legalized even if all the lies about it are exposed as a gigantic fraud.

I don't even smoke it either. I just think the prohibition of it is insane.

5. I smoked pot for many years
From the time I was 9 until 30. The problem I see with legalizing pot is twofold:

1. If pot were legal, squares would smoke it.
2. Nobody would get anything done because they would be, in the words of Mr. Cent, "High all the time."

I don't need Dom Perignon, I don't need Cris
Tanqueray and Alize, I don't need shit
Nigga I'm high all the time, I smoke that good shit
I stay high all the time, man I'm on some hood shit

Give me some dro, purple haze, and some chocolate
Give me a dutch and a lighter I'll spark shit
And stay high all the time, I smoke that good shit
I'm high all the time, man I'm on some hood shit

15. Swell argument.
I find your use of the caps lock key to be rather inelegant. I suppose that, if we were to meet in person, you'd try to persuade me shouting.

7. You're really playing into the stereotype
I've smoked for over 40 years. In college I aced all my exams and at work am known as someone that gets her work done on time and done well. So it's just bullshit that it makes people lazy.

And so what if squares smoke it...maybe they'll become better people.

16. OK, maybe it's not the case that no one would get anything done
But it's not like cocaine or crank: it makes you mellow and restful. I know that I wouldn't have accomplished as much as I have if I still smoked pot, though. I think the stereotype is at least partly true: for me, pot seemed to affect my memory, and also to make me less motivated to go out and do all the things that must be done. If I had a lot of sweet hashish right now, I don't think I'd jump up to accomplish the many things I must do. I'd probably sit here, smoke it, watch some Dr. Who, and giggle until such time as I felt like smoking more.

Am I alone here?

9. Well... alcohol and tobacco are legal, yet things have managed to get done...
One of my personal heroes, Carl Sagan, was a heavy pot smoker (so was Feynman) and somehow he managed to get plenty of work done. One of the best scientists I have worked with during my PhD studies was a heavy pot smoker. He was able to write some of the most beautiful (and well performing) code I have seen.

I know it may be conterintuitive to the average self tortured puritan American, but people tend to be more productive and focused when they are happy and with a reduced stress level. Who would have thought of that, eh?

God forbid there is something out there which is grows freely and which can make people happy.

8. Lazy is a Huge Stereotype!
I've smoked regularly for over 15 years. I have a PhD, provide responsibly for my family, and often feel motivated when under the influence. The criminalization of pot is an absolute joke when looked at from a rationale point of view that includes all the negative consequences currently in our society because of the way we treat this natural plant.

19. The way we treat the people who smoke the plant
is worse than how we treat the plant itself.

It's also a "stereotype" that alcoholics tend to wrap their cars around tree, but just because a given alcoholic has failed to do so does not falsify that observation. The effects of pot are dose-dependent: most of the cognitive deficits are reported in heavy users. Moreover, the fact that you have a PhD makes you special:

"Cognitive performance in individuals with lower IQ scores decreased as the number of joints smoked per week increased, while those with higher IQ scores had fewer decrements even as marijuana use increased. "This finding demonstrates the concept of cognitive reserve," says Dr. Bolla. "People with higher IQs do better than those with lower IQs; the fewer cognitive reserves you have, the more impact you will see from a slight change in brain function."

Thus, it's not surprising you don't report any of the worst side effects of using pot, because you're a smarty, and are able to compensate, the same way smart folks with a mental illness are also able to compensate. But a rational drug policy isn't just aimed at smart folks: it's aimed at everyone, and I'm not confident at all that many folks wouldn't opt to be high all the time.

13. I don't care
so much for legalization as much as decriminilazation. That is
a softer word. I see nothing wrong with someone that puffs a
little after work in the evening or on a day off. I frown on
people that puff all day long on someone elses dime.I fear the
effects of alcohol more than I do puffy stuff. Allowing
legally to posses under 35 grams would not increase hard drug
use. Think about it. I'd be content to sit on an oz of some of
that California stinky bud. Don't need no coke, no meth, no
acid, or extascy.Forget the taxation issue tons of money would
be saved in prosecuting, jailing and interdiction efforts.

14. The way to legalize pot is:
make driving under the influence of pot very _illegal. That will allow its use in the privacy of ones home.

That will give politicians like Obama; an "out".

17. Steven Baldwin v. Ron Paul
Youtube confrontation on pot legalization: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NWUvWWl5S5M

Paul is for legalization, but of course, his 'libertarian' stance leaves it open to state governments to be the 'nanny'.

Can anyone tell me how to embed videos? Using the code from YT doesn't seem to work.
