Joe Biden smells a rat with the Joe the Plumber story.

Essentially he says that he knows of no plumber who would make $250,000 and those working as plumbers (making $45/avg) would do very well under Obama's tax plan.

8. Now maybe I just have too long a memory, but if we can bring up what Bill Ayers did
40 years ago, we can bring up that Nixon had plumbers on his payroll way back when. They helped him out with a Watergate "plumbing" project.

7. Well, perhaps he makes that much
because he's a relative of Charles Keating. Perhaps having such familial connections helps one to get government contracts or just helps one know how to defraud the public? I dunno.

9. Biden's nose is working. Joe is a rat. Even if plumbers were charging $100 an hour,
worked 40 hours a week every week, and had zero deductions, they wouldn't break $250,000.
$100 x 40 x 52 = $208,000.

13. It could be over $250k...
Joe isn't starting his own plumbing business, he's looking to BUY the business from his boss. So this isn't a matter of working x hours at so much an hour... this could be a business with a number of plumbers out on the road doing calls at the same time, so it is clearly possible for the owner of such a business to be making over $250k.

Now, keep in mind, businesses aren't taxed on gross sales, but only on net profit. If indeed this business is generating a *profit* of over $250,000 after paying its employees, depreciating its trucks and equipment, etc., then yes, they will pay more taxes under Obama than McCain. Not a lot more, no one is talking about 90% tax rates here, but a little more.

Despite the "Joe" name, this is not the Average american, few are lucky enough to be able to buy a business that will generate a $250k+ annual profit. It's wonderful that Joe the Plumber can do this. He will then also be able to afford to pay just a little more in taxes, too.

(BTW, where I am, plumbers are regularly billed at well over $100 an hour. I don't know how much the plumbers themselves get, but the company owners, the Joes, are probably indeed doing rather well.)

15. Good point
Joe's business would either not get a tax break or would pay slightly higher taxes under Obama's plan. He also needs to consider what kind of an economy he wants his business to function in - in a lousy economy, he would pay less taxes because he would be making less money.

16. I think at that point he's not a "plumber", he's a "plumbing business owner"
