1. That was some pretty harsh questioning
I like how Obama handled himself and I hope this helps to put this nonsense to bed.

2. That was a "gotcha" interview.
I think Obama should have refused to go on Fox News. They set it up so that he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't? Now they want him to "quit" his church because they don't like what a pastor said? Nobody ever asked a Republican politician to "quit" his church because of outrageous sermons from their pastors. Granted, Obama's pastor did say something outrageous, but to ask him to quit his church over it is even more outrageous. This is red meat for Republicans.

6. Obama was asked If he would quit if he had heard the sermon in person.
And he finally answered YES. If he knew how pervasive comments like that were from the Rev. he would have quit. What is scary to me is that Obama has known this man for close to 20 years but SAYS he didn't know about this. It makes me wonder about Obama's ability to recognize lack of character in those closest to him. If nothing else his pastor should have brought this up to him and given him the ability to opt out of having the pastor so prominent in his campaign.

11. the guy is paid to peddle mythology to the masses
there is a little snake oil salesman in all pastors. Who cares what he thinks?

It's why we shouldn't mix church and state. One is based on emotion and one should be far from it.

12. Obama cares what he thinks.
It isn't about THAT he peddles mythology to the masses. It's about HOW he peddles mytology AT MASS. Obama brought HIS church into the campaign. The Rev. WAS on Obama's FAITH committee and WAS his spiritual LEADER. Obama SHOULD have veted him but did not do so. Makes Obama's choices of who to have and keep in his circle questionable.

34. I think Obama was pretty clear that these statements weren't representative of his church experience
They only came out all in a row in this way because a major news organization purchased archival versions of some or all of Wright's sermons, and strung together the most volatile and controversial statements. Even so, one of the things that has impressed me most about Obama is his willingness to engage in dialogue with people rather than put up walls to block people out. It's a trait that I think this country needs right now, but it's human nature to condemn and fingerwag, and I'm sure a lot of people will judge him harshly for his reluctance to play that game.

3. These people need to sit through a nutty Priest's sermons on a Sunday
morning, railing against birth control, homosexuality, etc. The Rev. Wright is a choirboy next to some of the nuts I've learned to ignore. However, I still go to Mass.

13. Lying about what ????
Look buddy, if you're going going to criticize this preacher, you'd better get a true sense for what he says. The guy said ONE thing that's off color when taken out of context. This is not Louis Farrakhan who repeatedly talks about how white men or the devil. Nor is the consistently anti-semetic Al Sharpton (a Clinton ally) who consistently paraded frauds out in public.

This preacher made poignant observations which I have often read right here on the underground.

BTW, I think you should stop using that picture. She doesn't look like that anymore. How about this one:

Or this one:

Or this one:

Or this one:

Or this one:

How about this to show her foreign policy experience as well as her sense of women's liberations:

This one obviously came before her latest botox treatment. There is nothing wrong with it and I think she would be more effective with this version as I don't think the "cutie" thing really works for her anyway. Men don't vote based on sex appeal.

Finally I know this one isn't recent but it's really cool and I think that both of the people in it should think a little harder about what their ideals were when it was taken.

24. I don't think he's lying so much as parsing and evading.
If you're going going to give Obama and his preacher a pass, you'd better get a true sense for what he says.
"The guy said ONE thing that's off color" OMFG you didn't really say OFF COLOR!
"when taken out of context." I'm sure the entire sermon will be available on YouTube and on future repuge campaign ads.
"This is not Louis Farrakhan who repeatedly talks about how white men or the devil."
The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan received the "Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright,Jr. Lifetime Achievement Trumpeteer" Award at the 2007 Trumpet Gala held on November 2, at the Hyatt Regency Chicago.
Check out these videos from Trinity Chicago.

"How about this to show her foreign policy experience as well as her sense of women's liberations:"
Where is YOUR sense of respect for culture? Are you saying that IF Michelle Obama becomes First Lady, she will NOT wear a scarf when meeting a leader of a MUSLIM country? Do you realize that according to Muslim culture, doing so would show a PERSONAL LACK OF SELF ESTEEM on HER part?
BTW a I'm sure a short search of Google images would come up with many unfaltering images of both Obamas.
"Men don't vote based on sex appeal."
Is a sexist remark.

27. Please describe ...

Please describe the nature of my desperation. Obama has a preacher who occasionally says something controversial but is effectively ... aligned according the values on this forum.

Now if the Reverend was endorsing Obama, than that church will have trouble with it's 501(c)3 status. This is hardly FileGate.

8. Good for him for going on Fox and making them look like bullies
at first the reporter was acting like an interrogator, like he thought his questions and this issue was worthy of torture. (Who would Jesus crucify?)

When Obama gave that little laugh, in response to the rapid fire stupid questions (already answered and known to everyone) the guy looked like a brown shirted thug.

While there is no doubt in my mind the people at Fox and their viewers will continue to hate him and us, appearances like that make it harder to spin that we are monsters.

1. Obama has attended a CHRISTIAN church for 17 years, more or less regularly
2. Has donated money to a CHRISTIAN church regularly
3. Was married in a CHRISTIAN church.
4. Has had his daughters both baptized in a CHRISTIAN church.

What's not to like? I think the Obama advisers must be laughing with delight. FOX and co. have had to throw the Muslim thing overboard in order to pick up this new line of attack--which will die out and they will be left empty handed. It's now far too late to go back and pick up the old worn out smear.

28. Barack Obama did an excellent job taking on FOX news
I think anyone who thinks Obama doesn't have what it takes to beat McCain needs to see how well he handled this obvious hit piece. That so called "interviewer" sounded more like a lawyer cross examining a witness.

didn't obama 'promise' to 'talk' to o'liely, when billo confronted him at a rally?

I didn't think he would do it then, and I'm disappointed he did it now. They are not worth responding to- in my opinion.

32. I'm fine with the interview.
I wish our press did this kind of questioning across the board, actually. Seriously, if Major Garrett had been conducting that kind of an interview with a Republican, everybody here would be singing his praises and starting "thankyoumajorgarrett.com" websites.

I just wish the press did do this across the board instead of sniffing each other's butts all the time. He covered the pertinent issues and didn't let the candidate get away with dissembling, while still being respectful and courteous and allowing the candidate to speak. Most importantly, Garrett conducted the interview in a manner such that it wasn't about him, but about the subject at hand.

We may think the subject matter was stupid, but the manner in which the interview was conducted was about as professional as I've seen in the American press.
