From the poster of the video:

"Franklin D. Roosevelt and the Democratic party carry forty-six states, losing only little Maine and Vermont, in the mightiest election victory scored by any political organization since the triumph of james Monroe in 1820. Dramatic pictures show outstanding events of an exciting day, with the President voting at Hyde Park, N. Y., and later receiving the cheers and congratulations of his neighbors, Gov. Landon casts his vote at Independence, Kan. Tremendous throngs jam Times Square, New York, celebrating the victory but others 'pay off' election bets in queer and amusing fashion." (some parts silent in this partial newsreel without narration) ... (more)"

The footage is rare, the sound is intermittent, but it is just amazing to see it.

My husband's mother saved everything, never threw anything away. We even found some Landon buttons. Landon Knox I think, elephant and all.

1. This was especially thrilling for me to see, one of the reasons being I wasn't
born yet! I do remember as a child coming home from school one day and finding my mother at the ironing board crying her heart out. (Mother was not a cryer) FDR had died. The nation truly mourned and the Atwater Kent radio was tuned into the news covering his funeral. This generation had gone through the depression and for many, had it not been for his works and programs, would have starved. They truly were the "greatest generation" and FDR was symbolic of that. Thank you so much for posting. It brought back some great memories.

2. His works and programs made a future possible for many.
The tales my grandparents told of the depression were harrowing. I did not like hearing them, they were not pleasant stories. But I am glad they made us listen.

Those works and programs were indeed a blessing.

4. inauguration
Our newly-elected Governor of NY State Eliot Spitzer is getting things started in the right way. On the morning of Jan. 1 at 6:00 everybody is invited to go jogging with him in a park in Albany. Later in the day there is a free concert with James Taylor and Natalie Merchant.

Beats those creepy black-tie affairs the Republicans always put on.

13. Thank you for posting this video link!
I'm glad to see the History Channel did something other than another documentary on German fascism and focused on this fascist plot here in America.

12. I believe that theory isn't accepted by any reputable historian
I could be mistaken, but the last I read anything about this claim, it was largely discounted by most historians. If you have any links contradicting this, I'd like to see them.

7. FDR's New Deal was wildly popular in both the city and the countryside, even the Deep South.
Edited on Sun Dec-17-06 02:38 AM by Selatius
Of course, the South was Democratic country in those days, as the Democratic Party at the time did not embrace the idea of racial equality, gay marriage, abortion, or any other liberal idea. To my knowledge, few Republicans did either in those days. The country was hurting from the Great Depression, and he offered social programs to help the poor, which was far more than what the laissez-faire capitalists in the Republican Party were offering.

America was politically unstable as a result of the Great Depression. If there was no FDR, there might've been a successful coup against the government, replacing it with either a fascist dictatorship or a communist dictatorship. Then America's history would've been radically different than what it actually is.

9. I was 8 years old when my folks got the good
news that FDR was elected. There was joy and hope in my family that this man was going to bring change for good in this country; and he did!
