EAST SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Union officials say a tentative contract between Magna International and the United Auto Workers will save approximately 2,700 jobs at the New Process Gear plant in suburban Syracuse.

But one union leader warned that rejection of the agreement would put the plant's future in jeopardy.

"A 'no' vote on this agreement kills our plant. There is no other option for us in Syracuse," said Doug Havens, president of UAW Local 624.

Union officials planned an informational meeting on the new contract Sunday. Union members will vote on the pact next Wednesday and Thursday.

Havens called the proposed contract "the best independent supplier agreement in the country" and said it would make the plant more competitive, allowing it to bid and win new contracts. The East Syracuse plant supplies drivetrain parts to major automakers.

The UAW has also secured a written promise from Magna to invest in the plant, union leaders said.

1. I have a friend who works there that is very worried
that the union won't vote yes. She is salaried and was forced to take a day off without pay last month. I wouldn't be surprised if they left anyway, maybe wait a year first. Carrier left and we thought they were here for good, especially after all those tax incentives.
