Today in Labor History Dec 27 FDR seized the railroads to avert a nationwide strike

December 27

December 27, 1943 - President Franklin Delano Roosevelt seized the railroads to avert a nationwide strike. His announcement that the railroads would be temporarily placed under the "supervision" of the War Department prompted the five railroad brotherhoods to agree to his offer to arbitrate the dispute.
