BOONE, Iowa — Police shot and killed a Boone Hy-Vee Supermarket employee who allegedly ran through the store with a knife, pulling items from shelves and yelling “I have HIV” late Monday morning.
The dead man’s name and age were not released by Boone Police Chief Bill Skare after the incident.
Officers were dispatched to the store at Eighth and Benton Streets at about 10:50 a.m. on reports of an employee with a knife, Skare said.
“The officers responded and there was an officer-involved shooting,” Skare said, adding that he could not release any other information, including the number of officers involved or the number of shots fired.
“It’s too early in the investigation, and I can’t answer that right now,” Skare replied when asked if the employee was “disgruntled.”
About 25 store employees stood huddled in groups of four and five at about 11 a.m. as Boone County sheriff’s deputies took their names and phone numbers for statements. Employees would not comment on what they saw or heard. The store was closed after the shooting and remained closed the remainder of the day.
