University unions to protest mandatory furloughs

MINNEAPOLIS - Unions representing University of Minnesota workers plan a call-in day to protest the administration’s plan to institute mandatory furloughs for employees.

The administration announced earlier this year that to address cuts in state funding, the university will shut down between Christmas and New Year’s and force all bargaining unit employees to participate in a three-day furlough. Non-represented employees will receive salary cuts.

AFSCME Local 3800, which represents university clerical workers, plans a “Call-In Day” Thursday, June 10. Participants are urged to call or e-mail University President Robert Bruininks and “tell him to stop mandatory furloughs and implement other viable budget-saving options such as voluntary furloughs, sliding-scale pay cuts and cutting the salaries and number of administrators making more than $200,000.”

Union members also plan to pack a Board of Regents’ public hearing on the university budget at 11:30 a.m. Monday, June 14, at the McNamara Alumni Center, 200 Oak St.
