Workplace violations at Minneapolis VA Medical Center cited

Federal authorities say a recent inspection of the Minneapolis Veterans Affairs Medical Center found 37 workplace safety violations.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration says 32 of the violations were serious, four were repeat violations and one was listed as "other-than-serious." The violations were announced Tuesday by the U.S. Department of Labor.

The inspection started in September 2009 as part of a program focusing on federal work sites that had a high number of work-related injuries and illnesses.

The serious violations included electrical hazards, safeguards of machines to prevent injuries if workers are pulled into moving parts and improper storage of oxygen.

A spokesman for the facility did not immediately reply to an e-mail seeking comment.

Because the medical center is a federal employer, no fines are assessed.
