The Minnesota Fair Trade Coalition (MNFTC) seeks a State Director to further the goals of the organization. This is a part-time (20 hours per week) position with the potential of evolving into a full-time position.

The Minnesota Fair Trade Coalition is a part of the Citizens Trade Campaign. We are a state coalition comprised of labor, environmental, family farm, religious and civil society groups. We oppose trade agreements that primarily benefit only multinational corporations and support fair trade policies, such as the proposed TRADE Act, which promote prosperity across borders, protect the environment and protect the rights of workers.

The qualified candidate will have the skills to grow and maintain the MNFTC, including a background in issue advocacy, coalition building, fundraising, media relations and grassroots lobbying. The person selected for this position will be responsible for establishing and maintaining effective external relations with member groups, strategic allies, potential stakeholders and government officials. He or she will have overall responsibility for the implementation of activities within the organization. The State Director reports to the Citizens Trade Campaign Director and MNFTC Steering Committee.

Political Organizer

The Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation, AFL-CIO, representing union members in the seven-county west metro area, is seeking to hire a political organizer.

The Political Organizer will work under the direction of the President of the Minneapolis Regional Labor Federation (MRLF). S/he will be responsible for carrying out local strategies for electing Labor endorsed candidates to federal, state, county and city offices, and assisting with local issue-oriented educational programs for union members. S/he will also work in coalition with other unions and non-profit organizations, and contribute to the efforts of the overall MRLF political program.

Requirements include:

• 1-2 years of demonstrated success in a leadership role with a labor or political organization.
• Ability to initiate and lead grassroots campaigns with union members.
• Ability to work with diverse groups in coalition.
• Self-direction and initiative to create and move a regional political program, and manage multiple ongoing projects at once.
• Flexibility to work long and irregular hours, including weekends and evenings.

Desired experience includes:

• Background in political action and legislative strategy.
• Knowledge of Labor unions and Labor movement goals and priorities.
• Strong communication skills.
• Knowledge of maintaining, managing and manipulating political data and databases.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel and Access.
• Political communications experience.

Minnesota AFL-CIO Communications Director

The Minnesota AFL-CIO is seeking resumes for the full time staff position of Communications Director. The Minnesota AFL-CIO is a dynamic statewide labor federation representing more than 1,000 Minnesota unions with more than 300,000 members statewide. The Minnesota AFL-CIO’s mission is to achieve social and economic justice for Minnesota’s working people.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Communications Director directs the internal and external communications work of the Minnesota AFL-CIO and provides communications counsel to the officers and staff of the state labor federation.

The Director works with national AFL-CIO communications and field staff, Minnesota AFL-CIO executive officers, staff, affiliated unions and other stakeholders to develop key strategies and messages to support the organization’s goals.

The Director must be proficient in a wide variety of traditional and emerging media tools to support the electoral, legislative and political work of the Minnesota AFL-CIO.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

o Works with appropriate stakeholders to develop Minnesota AFL-CIO communications strategies and key messages.
o Creates and disseminates key messages for strategic priorities and campaigns, as well as for rapid response and crisis communications.
o Develops and maintains relationships with key journalists, editorial writers and columnists to garner positive legacy, labor and new media coverage of Minnesota AFL-CIO goals, activities and leaders.
o Works with other directors to ensure that activities and materials promote the organization’s goals and core messages, and that content approval and proofing processes are in place.
o Coordinates the Minnesota AFL-CIO Labor Pavilion at the Minnesota State Fair.
o Develops, writes and/or edits press releases, op-eds, letters to the editor, fact sheets, flyers and other communications materials necessary to execute Minnesota AFL-CIO goals.
o Manages relationships with designated consultants.
o Develops and executes annual Communications work plan that is aligned with the priorities in the Minnesota AFL-CIO Strategic Plan.
o Recommends annual Communications budget required to meet Strategic Plan and Communications Work Plan priorities.
o Develops measures of effectiveness and return on investment (ROI) for major projects. Uses resources, including financial and staff time, efficiently and effectively to complete projects within agreed budgets and deadlines.

QUALIFICATIONS

o Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of five years experience leading the communications work of a statewide organization.
o Experience working with diverse constituencies.
o Strong writing skills.
o Strong organizational and project management skills.
o Communications experience including considerable knowledge of PR, brand management and development of strategic messaging.
o Familiarity with union core values and organizing.
o Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with flexibility and good humor.
