AFL-CIO chief decries “union busting” in DC

The table-turning Michelle Rhee, chancellor of the D.C. public schools, announced last week that 229 teachers would be getting the pink slip in order to close a budget gap.

The firings became more than a local issue – the newly elected president of the AFL-CIO Richard Trumka condemned Rhee’s move as “a cold, hard case of union busting.”

“The labor movement is right here with you,” he said . “We’ll stand shoulder to shoulder with you for as long as it takes.”

But DC mayor Adrian Fenty – who has stood by Rhee’s efforts – denied that the firings were an affront to the teachers’ union.
