Abortion talk upsets students (4th Grade Teacher Suspended)

Parents in Washington County's Canon-McMillan School District called Tuesday for the firing of a suspended grade school teacher who described an abortion to students during a recent social studies class.

"You just don't bring it up to a 9-year-old," said Jim Stienstraw Jr., 43, of Cecil, whose daughter is a student in Katherine McGuire's fourth-grade class at Hills-Hendersonville Elementary School in Canonsburg. "My daughter's innocence was taken away. I cannot bring that back."

McGuire told her 9- and 10-year-old students that, during an abortion, a needle is injected into a woman's belly, and the fetus is sucked out and killed, Stienstraw said.

She then told students to put their heads on their desks, close their eyes and vote on whether they would have an abortion or put a baby up for adoption, Stienstraw said. McGuire voted for adoption, he said.

"To me, it's atrocious," Stienstraw said. "My daughter was crying. She doesn't want to go to school. The only thing that sticks in her mind is that a baby is being killed."
