Bill Moyers Screws Up While Subbing For Charlie Rose

Tonight's program featured an interesting interview with Daniel Dennett.

The talk turned to music at several points, and Moyers read composer John Adams description
of the meaning behind his piece "On The Transmigration of Souls" which was written to remember
the WTC victims of 911 (the piece was premiered by the NY Phil). Unfortunately, Moyers kept referring to
composer Adams as John Cage - a very different American composer who died in 1992.

Moyers made this mistake even though he was reading from a Playbill that contained Adams' note...which I
found interesting - in some respects, it tended to confirm the hypothesis being presented by Dennett (and
Dennett - who is well versed in music - failed to correct Moyers' mistake).

That flub aside, it was a very good show that I would encourage DUers to catch on the rerun.

2. I did notice that but

didn't know who the actual composer was that he quoted. Btw, did you happen to see what came on afterward? The performences by the Julliard students, faculty and alumni? WONDERFUL concert!

3. That played before CR on the left coast.

I enjoyed much of it, but not all of it was stellar. I wonder why they gave so much prominence to the alumni? I mean,
Kevin Kline basically represented the drama wing as the students stood around...a few got a line here or there.

The 13-yr-old pianist in the Rach 2 turned out to be unfortunate - way too much pressure and lots of missed notes
(sure, it was amazing for a kid, but let's admit the obvious and not get religious/blind about his failings). I hate when kids
get pushed like this.

I hated the dance sequence...crappy, derivative music and who-cares choreography.

I sang with Renee Fleming a few years ago at Carnegie Hall. I think her middle voice has tightened up these days,
but her top is still stunning and she's an engaging performer.

The faculty string quartet + pianist Ax was ill-served by the microphone placement in the Brahms.

I wish they would have just let the current students shine...more works by the orchestra, for example.

Still, high-quality...I'm picking nits here.
