On April 5, several congressmen will be bringing a resolution
(H. Res 543) to the floor of the House that would allow debate
of a joint resolution requiring the President to develop and
implement a withdrawal plan for Iraq. In other words, 543 would
required the House of Representatives to debate the President's
current strategy in Iraq. You can read more about this issue at
Daily Kos (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/3/27/132253/985),
or in a more lengthy article on the DC for Democracy web site (
http://www.dcfordemocracy.org/change-the-course/).

Below is a sample letter that we have provided. As always, it
is more effective if you include your own words. Please be
aware that your members of congress may have already decided to
support this bill. The sample letter contains language that
reflects this.

Dear Congressman,

I am writing to urge you to join other representatives in
supporting House Resolution 543. On April 5 a number of
Representatives, including your colleague Ike Skelton, will
bring House Resolution 543 to the floor of the House of
Representatives. This resolution will call for consideration of
House Joint Resolution 55, which calls on the President to
develop and implement a plan for withdrawal of U.S. troops from
Iraq. If you have already decided to support the resolution, I
thank you and applaud your decision to stand up for our troops
and for America’s future.

It has been more than three years since the United States
invasion of Iraq. In that time, more than 2,300 American men
and women, as well as numerous Iraqis, have lost their lives in
a struggle that has done nothing to help our country, or our
standing in the world.

This is why America deserves an open and honest debate on the
future of U.S. policy in Iraq.

Sincerely,
