An Open Letter to the Republican Thieves (The Reverse Robin-hoods)

To the Rich who Steal from the Poor & Working Class (& the Ever Disappearing Middle-Class,

Today, I watched a woman in line at the pharmacy. She had a Wal-mart vest on over her jersey. She was bent, and she could not speak clearly. Her hands shook as she pressed the buttons on the scanner to process her payment. The clerk gave her the total. 252.00, AFTER insurance. She stood frozen. She said to the clerk 'That is my entire weeks paycheck after taxes'. The clerk offered to divide her meds so that she could get two weeks now, and then come back and get the other two weeks. She stood shock still, contemplating what to do. Eventually, she had the clerk pour out half the meds in her bottle and payed. The clerk sighed as she walked away. She looked at me and said 'This job gets harder everyday'.

Last Night:

Grocery Shopping. 111.00 spent on a small order of groceries for a family of three. I commented to the check out woman on the prices, and she agreed that it is terrible. We got to chatting about the high cost of everything and how much it takes to merely survive. She works two jobs - one at the bank during the day and one at night at the grocery store. She is 67 years old. She works two jobs. She has no choice.

Two Sunday's ago: Driving to Sunday breakfast with my family. Fierce snow storm. Wind chills easily in the single digits to below zero. Picked up TWO people walking to work (no buses on Sunday, and the bus system in this rural area takes 1 - 2 hours to get from point A to point B when it is working. Dropped one of at Wal-Mart & one at the local Cumberland Farms. One lived three miles away. Both had cars from the 80s that just died. They did not have the money or credit to buy another one. They walk to work every day now. They work full time plus overtime.

I could give you a story for almost every day of the week, JUST like these.

These are nameless people who are the victims of your thieving and pillaging. The ones that you demonize as lazy and useless, so as not to have to take the responsiblity for the poverty and suffering that results from your leeching.

They are the elderly.

A majority of them are women and children.

They are the sick, the disabled, the ones that have fallen prey to unfortunate life events. Many are educated. Many are very hard-working (harder working then you could ever dream of being). Salt of the earth hard-working people who have more integrity in the tip of thier pinky nail then you have in your entire blue blooded, useless bodies).

The struggling masses. The down-sized. The true American people who make up the vast majority, but to you - just the bottom line and a cost benefit factor.

These are the faces of your victimes.

I thought you should know them, or at least know they exist.

You don't get to see them in your gated communities and limousines.

But, they are there.

In a just world, you would pay for your crimes. But, you won't. If any one of these people stole a measly pittance to help their struggling families, THEY would be jailed. They would have a felony added to their burden.

But, not you.

You are sanitized criminals.

But, you are criminals.

And, you have started a class war.

May you someday reap what you sow.

Loot-The-National-Treasury" program?

It's obvious that you're with "them", and not with "us"...

3. WE can only wish they had
a conscience, unfortunately they only see green.I also see this everyday and it makes me crazy.Until the American people say enough is enough they will keep on stealing and defrauding the poor and middle class out of everything we own until we have nothing left to give.

4. Did you write this?

The price that some are paying for the graft and corruption of the few.

This should be sent and published nationwide. May we? Is there a way to take this and send it to every editorial page in the country? It deserves to be read Edward Murrow style on every radio and news program in the country.

This is the road that some have led us down. These are thieves in broad daylight who have duped many using a few key issues and the power of the press to divide and conquer this nation.

5. Thanks

Anything I write is always fine to use.

It is terrible what is happening to the good people of this nation.

13. Agreed, but let's get systematic
Try Air America first. Then a list of national outlets--not sure what would be best. Suggestions?

6. I contrast these people's lives with what I saw
in 2005 at the night of cowboy boots and furs. The attitude of those who went to the inaugural ball last January was that they were above it all.

Above us all.

But the tide does turn. It gathers momentum slowly until it cannot be stopped. And everything in its path will be swept away.

7. You mean puke fest?

It is sick. I remember campaigning in Nov 2004 for Kerry & holding a sign on the corner with literature.

A bimbo in a limousine had the nerve to pull up to me, roll down her window in the back and say 'Go Bush'.

I dropped my literature. I told her to shut up - kids are hungry and people are struggling while she cheers a moron from the back of her limo.

She rolled her window up fast.

10. Beyond the corruption and greed...

There is a HUGE class disconnect.

People who haven't been there often do not have empathy for the less fortunate.

11. Nice letter, but they are not susceptible
to reasoning, pleading etc.

It's like asking your abuser nicely to stop abusing you. Like asking to robber to stop robbing you. At best he'll laugh in your face, at worst beat you up some more. More likely he will ignore you.

Otoh your letter may well serve to push a few people closer to the exit of the matrix.

12. Brilliantly written, well-crafted, eloquent piece of ...
... Americana poetry.

I only wish it were fiction. Alas, it is not.

Thank you for bringing these very real people to life on the page, for all of us to see, to hear, to empathize with - and hopefully, to help.
