Mississippi outlaws sex toys (Dangerous Didoes)
Well, I am glad to see that the local legislators are focusing on the most pressing issues of the day. I’ve long believed that a three-dimensional, possibly battery-operated device is far more menacing than a handgun. In Mississippi, people can buy guns at a gun show with no background check and certain weapons can be carried almost anywhere. Sure, guns and toys can bring joy and a sense of comfort to the user, but apparently the legislators concluded that a genital replica is a far greater threat to society.

This, from a state that levies only an 18-cent tax on cigarettes, 55 cents below the national average and where 62 percent of residents are overweight, making it the fattest state in the country. Yet still the public schools don’t make gym class compulsory. Mississippi’s laws would make you believe sex is the single greatest threat to public safety and well-being. After all, it’s illegal in Mississippi to have sex with someone you’re not married to or to live with someone other than your spouse.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6308419/

This from a state that allows riverboat gambling, sterilization of "certain defectives" (SEC. 41-45-1. Sexual sterilization of certain defectives authorized), and still maintains county work farms for prisoners.

What a backwards ass place to live.

17. Show of what?
Archaic laws that no one bothers to enforce but remain languishing on the books are one thing, but a newly-passed law has a definite purpose. They intend to prosecute people for this, no doubt about it.

So this state is making criminals out of large parts of their population?

I would imagine most sales are mail order. I am curious whether the mail order companies will comply with this law.

49.  Alabama also has a sex toy ban but guns are OK.

Sex toys still banned in Alabama, guns okay

A decision issued yesterday by the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals says Alabama doesn't have to lift its silly, arcane 1998 law banning the sale of sex toys. The Constitution does not include a right to sexual privacy, the panel of three judges ruled. Many Americans would disagree, including this one. To paraphrase Andrew Orlowski's brilliant quip about the INDUCE Act, under this law one could stroll down Alabama's southern streets selling semiautomatic rifles and dildos, and be arrested for the dildos.
"In this case, the American Civil Liberties Union ('ACLU') invites us to add a new right to the current catalogue of fundamental rights under the Constitution: a right to sexual privacy. It further asks us to declare Alabama's statute prohibiting the sale of 'sex toys' to be an impermissible burden on this right. Alabama responds that the statute exercises a time-honored use of state police power -- restricting the sale of sex. We are compelled to agree with Alabama and must decline the ACLU's invitation. (...)
"Alabama's Anti-Obscenity Enforcement Act prohibits, among other things, the commercial distribution of 'any device designed or marketed as useful primarily for the stimulation of human genital organs for any thing of pecuniary value.'"

7. well it's about time, I tell you
last time I was down in Mississippi, there were people using artificial stimulators on themselves all over the place, church, school, in the park, everywhere, I tell you. And as I always say, if a woman can't be satisfied with the man that God picked for her, then she wasn't supposed to be satisfied. Take what God gives you. (well, except for viagra, God sent that to us, he wants us to be happy, after all) Is anyone suprised by the damage from Katrina? if people hadn't been sitting around diddling themselves with 'marital aids' They would have seen the warning signs and God wouldn't have sent the 'cane to punish them. duh.

out in the woods, with bubba providing for his neighbors. Also, DNA and Drug Testing Signs on every other electric line pole. And you can't swing a cat in the state without hitting a baptist church filled on sunday mornings by meth lab owners and single parent teenagers with their babies on their hips. Praise the lord.

46. We're good
but I do appreciate the sentiment. We moved here from Louisiana 7 years ago because real estate was dirt cheap and we will be making a killing on our one little acre here. On the upside we are 50 miles from the french quarter which is back up and running so my social bucks go out of state. About twice a year we go down and spend the weekend, its like zooming to another planet. Not only are dildoes available, on just about any given evening you can view some copulating action on the balconies over looking bourbon street. And, oh by the way, God through Katrina wiped out a whole bunch of churches on the gulfcoast but the strip clubs on Bourbon Street were up and running two weeks after the storm passed and raked in the big bucks from construction workers and National Guardsmen, praise the lord. Wife and I happily married and rich by south Mississippi standards, no kids, just keeping an eye on the population and intensifying my desire to never, ever voting for a republican or a conservative for anything.

Do I dare start a booming underground market for pulsating, throbbing dildoes? I'm only 50 miles from New Orleans, the supply there is limitless. Pssst, hey miss, do you need one of these. Cash only. I'm just so fucking proud of my state legislature. Also this year they passed a law which would keep hunting accidents from being made a part of the public record.

I can't believe that a modern-day state legislature would even address the issue. I guess if someone wanted to press the matter, they could make a dildo that fires live rounds (or a gun that has a strap-on attachment) and let the lawmakers puzzle that out for a while.
