US Senate votes debt limit hike to $8.965 trillion(52-48)repubs

The U.S. Senate on Thursday approved a $781 billion increase in U.S. borrowing authority aimed at averting a possible government default on debt this month. The Senate voted 52-48 to raise the federal debt limit to $8.965 trillion. The measure, the fourth time the cap has been raised since 2002, now goes to U.S. President George W. Bushfor signing into law.

Before the vote, the Republican-controlled Senate defeated a move by Democrats to amend the legislation. Had Democrats been successful, they would have forced the U.S. House of Representatives to vote on the bill before recessing on Thursday for more than a week. The House approved the debt limit increase nearly a year ago, when it passed a fiscal 2006 budget blueprint. The Senate amendment, by Max Baucus, a Montana Democrat, would have required a study on the impact of rapidly-growing foreign-held debt.

No Democrats voted for raising the debt limit, leaving Republicans with casting the politically-difficult vote in favor of increased borrowing. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, said the rapid run-up in U.S. debt since 2002 was because of the "reckless fiscal policies of this president" and because of a Republican-controlled Congress that he said is a "rubber stamp" of Bush's initiatives.

These guys are running the government like the world is going to end next week. I can't believe their talking about lowering taxes while raising the debt. "we won't tax you, we'll just give you money and start charging your children for it with interest". That's what it is.

And making the inevitable crash all that much more worse. What is going on here is that the 'Pugs are drawing this out, hoping that the crash won't come on Bush's watch, but on the watch of the next Dem in office. Thus they can blame whoever that is. It is a strategy that might even work.

But folks, we're going to be in for some real rough times. Inflation is going to rise in direct proportion to this, and the economic crash that is barreling down the road towards us is going to make the Great Depression look like the Roaring Twenties. Prepare yourself for this crisis if you can. Pay down your debt, start growing your own food, invest in making yourself energy self sufficient. Get yourself out of the markets ASAP.

you see WE CAN'T raise our OWN debt limit whenever we want, we're supposed to live within our means. The same doesn't apply to the Republican controlled government. They wouldn't qualify for bankruptcy under the new laws, either, They'd have to pay down their debt little by little until the debt was paid. Of course, their credit rating would be destroyed in the process as well.

People learn by watching, and watching their government run up huge deficits seems to give them permission to do it themselves. The only thing is, there are two sets of rules and OUR set of rules whacks us in the ass when WE do it. bush's credit card bill is staggering, unfortunately the entire country has to pay it off.
