LDS church tells members to consider voting for more than just one party
Its about time!

-Snip-
A new statement on political participation from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Is it an invitation to consider more than just one party? Members of Utah's various political parties are taking note of a letter about political participation from the LDS Church's First Presidency.

I guess corruption and killing are not mormon values.

1. Several Mormons
I know are not republicans and don't vote that way. Many of them see the lack of Christian values in this group of crooks.

minding your own damn business is supposed to be a mormon value.

Definitely not a Republican value.

4. I always said that Hatch went against his "Prophet"
when he voted for and supports the war in Iraq. If my memory serves me correctly, I thought that the LDS President came out before we invaded Iraq and said he didn't support war and thought there could and should be a peaceful solution.

Mormon values - there is a pair of Mormon elders (how are they 'elder' when they're like, 20 yrs old? but that's another issue :P ) that comes in to the hunger-relief-oriented nonprofit where I work - they come every week, rain or shine, and work their butts off for a few hours. They are among the most reliable volunteers we have. And when they have a cancelled appointment somewhere else, they always call us to see if they can come in and work extra. They are good kids.

11. We should spread this quote around.
Edited on Tue Mar-14-06 08:30 PM by Skinner
"Principles compatible with the gospel may be found in the platforms of all major political parties." (Source)

Exactly right. I don't know much about the LDS Church, but this seems pretty significant to me. It makes you wonder why some Christians have so much difficulty seeing it. If we spread this quote around, maybe some other Christians who aren't Mormon might stop and think about their own party affiliation.

31. Yes, LDS Church is very opportunistic
and I don't really mean that as commentary, it's an observation of fact.

Compare Mormonism to Jehovah's Witnesses. They are completely opposite in some of their main doctrines and their status in the real world clearly demostrates these differences.

The Mormon church tells its members to be very much a part of this world and so they do. Many elected officials and successful business people in that religion, not to mention the wealth fo the chruch itself. Now look at the JW's, taught to shun the worldly world and put all their stock into the "new system" and, of course, WatchTower publications. ;-) These religions were started within not too many years of each other and yet one, the LDS, is obviously a much bigger force to be reckoned with.

Funny that their respective founders had similar short-comings.

13. The LDS do NOT agree with many of W's policies
They do not agree with faith based initiatives using tax $ and government control. They believe that charity is their duty and Christ's command.

They believe in separation of church and state. They believe in public schools until at the college level.

They teach a loving Jesus and a loving God.

I would think they would be quite upset with many stands of this administration.

IMHO, just about every religion that ignored the Bible and supported Bushitler has blood on their hands.

28. They sure didn't believe in separation of church and state
back in about 1971 when the state legislature in UT passed the Sunday Closing Law. All businesses were REQUIRED to be closed on Sunday, except thigs like gas stations and motels and hospitals.

Admittedly, this was thrown out as unconstitutional in near-record time, IIRC.

21. that is my thought too
I am sick of some people in utah who support Bush and don't have a good reason why.
I call these people Britney Spears republicans because of her quote.

"Honestly, I think we should just trust our president in every decision that he makes and we should just support that, you know, and be faithful in what happens". -Britney Spears

That quote best fits utah republicans

22. The face of Utah is changing
St. George, for instance, is one of the fastest growing cities in the nation. With it come a lot of more liberal people. (And, alas, a lot more people at some of the last wild places in North America)

Also, many Mormons live in more liberal states, or have left the church because the church is too politically conservative (much the opposite of what's happened in our labor unions).

They also need to protect their tax exemptions.

I have problems with both the Mormon church and the Mormon religion. The LDS church is, IMO, little better than a very big cult. That having been said, Mormons are by and large some of the finest people I know and Utah is one of my favorite states in the nation.

34. Salt Lake City mayor is a big D Democrat and very popular.
He's a pro-life, pro-choice Dem:

He could also stand on a “pro-life” platform while espousing a woman’s right to choose an abortion—that men have no business forcing women to decide either way.

“I will never have an abortion, because I will never be pregnant. Nor will I ever fully understand the anguish resulting from a pregnancy caused by rape, abuse or incest,” he says. “This is a women’s issue, and any change should be decided by women only. If my wife or daughter were raped, you can be damned sure I would demand the morning-after pill and if that didn’t work, an abortion. And I’d want it to be safe.”
