Family pleads guilty in student loan fraud

A Las Vegas woman charged in June 2004 with committing nearly $1 million in student loan fraud along with her four children and three grandchildren was sentenced Friday to nearly five years in prison and ordered to pay more than $600,000 in restitution.

Ann Armstrong, 63, pleaded guilty in October to one count of conspiracy to commit student loan fraud and one count of student loan fraud, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

Armstrong, her children and her grandchildren used false applications for grants and loans submitted by fax and e-mail to obtain financial aid checks, according to the Justice Department. They then used false identification documents to obtain the funds, officials said.
