...because we love the idea of a dedicated inside-baseball political show, we can't believe that we're stuck with an idiot like Chris Matthews as host, and we react to how appalling he is. This view has merit (when David Gregory's guest-hosted in the past, the potential of the format has come through).

2. Because lots of Americans still think Tweety has credibility.

They believe what he says. They think he's unbiased, a straight shooter, a good journalist -- you know, all the things he really isn't. It's dangerous for the political discourse that guys like Tweety, Tim Russert, etc. stay on the air in such prominent positions.

every now and then he might say something that is critical and i always see someone brings it up on DU. and how Matthews is being tough on Bush.
