If/When Cheney resigns - who will Bush name as VP?
I will kick off the speculation by naming . . . .Jeb Bush!!!!

Just the easiest, quickest way to handle the power transfer and keep it within the family. After Jeb , in year 17 of the Never-Ending War on Terror, a Bush nephew will be handed up on a silver platter as the new Bush head of state and so and so on into infinity.

12. I'll second that pick... And then she will go on and get the puke
nomination in 2008, and when anyone tries to bring up legitimate issues with her past actions the pukes will scream racism... Just my .02....

5. Is there a mandated succession, or does he pick whoever? Did Ford
take over when Agnew left the WH? Where did Ford come from?

15. I think that the President gets to pick. I may be wrong, but
that's what I think. Ford did take over when Agnew left and that is why he became President when Nixon resigned. I don't think he was in the line of succession until he was picked by Nixon, and again, I could be wrong.

16. if the veep office is vacant, the prez appoints and the senate confirms
ford happened to be a member of congress. minority leader iirc.

I think that they will have to drag him out; he's a meglomaniac. And he will always be working away at world domination hidden away.

8. A big DITTO to that
It's the only way to ensure continuation of the Bush Royal Succession, since Jebbie surely couldn't get elected even with Diebold counting the votes.

A lot of the speculation here just comes from people saying the names they know. However, if you were * and you could make the choice, wouldn't you go with Allen as well?

23. A usual tactic
for republicans on the national level, in determining the make-up of an administration, is to try to keep some balance among the three largest factions. My guess is that Cheney would be replaced by someone like James Baker III. While he is elderly, and fits into a different camp that Cheney, he would be of value from George W. Bush's point of view, in pulling the party together to survive the next three years.

32. Despite my sarcastic post above, I do agree
Baker is definitely a player. He surely would pass muster with the radical right in the Senate.

35. It would not
be taking someone straight from his father's camp. It would be acceptable to the neocon theorists. It would allow them to reach out to the conservative wing of the democratic party. It also allows the elders who are behind the scenes to get a steady hold on the reins of power at a difficult and high-risk time.

Guy Smiley?

40. Obviously I'm not serious about Mr. Smiley's prospects
But his elevation to President of the Senate and second "Guy" would be no more ridiculous than that of James Baker III. :)

Yes, all joking aside, Baker might fit the bill. Neocons and true conservatives alike would accept him, though it scares the bejesus out of me.

Where there's smoke, there's Baker.

25. A man was was not embarrassed about naming Harriet Miers
will not be embarrassed about naming, Jeb, Laura or perhaps his own father to be VP. He is both shameless and reckless. I'm surprised no one has mentioned Condi - I thought the Bushes were supposed to be encouraging her to run for President. Why not give a big leg up with the VP position?

28. Rice or a Republican Gov. you never heard of
Republicans love governors from states where the governor has virtually no power. No record to speak of, just rhetoric, executions and tax cuts. Bonus if the state gets lots of extra federal pork to prop up its "miracle" economy.

I don't think Cheney would resign if he is charged by Fitz because it would be obvious that it wouldn't be for health reasons. He is an arrogant, stuborn asshole and would go on the offensive.

determines they will appoint, oops, nominate for ‘election’, to the position of General Secretary, oops again, President.

Sorry for the confusion, but it is just so easy to confuse the GOP with the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.
