Where are the right to lifers now?
Children’s mental health affected by insecurity, say specialists E-mail this

Report, IRIN, 7 February 2006

BAGHDAD - The Association of Psychologists of Iraq (API) has released a report stating that the US-led invasion and occupation of the country have greatly affected the psychological development of many Iraqi children.

"Children in Iraq are seriously suffering psychologically with all the insecurity, especially with the fear of kidnapping and explosions," said API spokesman Maruan Abdullah. "In some cases, they’re found to be suffering extreme stress."

More than 1,000 children were interviewed countrywide over the past four months for the study, the findings of which were released on 5 February.

According to Abdullah, the survey was undertaken after a noticeable increase in the number of children seeking psychological counselling, many of whom were found to have learning difficulties.

"It was incredible how strong the results were," said Abdullah. "The only things they have on their minds are guns, bullets, death and a fear of the US occupation."

1. You don't understand
with a few exceptions, the right to lifers are only interested in life before birth. I know a few who are truly consistent in their beliefs and are against war and the death penalty, but I don't know if they are in the majority.

6. You are exactly right
Look at the Terri Schiavo fiasco. Right wingers loved swooping in on corporate jets to get in front of the cameras to tearfully say how badly they wanted to interfere with a man's right to decide when to remove life support from his wife, who was at the time long brain-dead - as proved by the subsequent autopsy. Those same hypocrites are at the same time gutting social services that currently (or used to) sustain the lives of countless individuals who really do have a chance of recovery.

7. It's better they can't learn, then fewer of them know how to build WMD...
The consequences of this whole fiasco in Iraq were completely over looked along with the exit strategy.

There will be a generation that has gotten used to living in fear of their own neighbors, living by the gun, and skeptical of the United States. Mission Accomplished!

11. Boy oh boy, I believe it. I know how disturbed I am about the war...
If I was an Iraqi adult I would be severely traumatized about all the violence and massive destruction. I can just imagine how terrifying the war is, for Iraqi children. Children make up a big proportion of the Iraqi population.

I actually think about this a lot... The US Army is the most powerful army in the history of the world, and we unleashed it on the citizens of a 2nd world country that was basically defenseless, where almost half the population is under the age of 16.

9. I already posted this some of this on another thread dealing with
the possibility of invading Iran. This post addresses it better, though.

I have a friend who is "Persian." At least that is how she addressed the topic to me after we had met a few times. I have studied about Islam, and had just finished reading "Reading Lolita in Tehran." I asked her if she meant that she was from Iran--and she looked startled. Apparently, her husband was a Colonel under the Shaw, and her family had to flee after the revolution. Getting arrested all the time and having your home and business vandalized were apparently a huge buzz kill.

Anyway, even though she had endured so much, she still was very bleak about the war with Iraq. She had lived through the Iran/Iraq war. Her kids were all small at the time, and they are *all* affected. One has severe learning disabilities and studders. Another is completely disabled, and all of them still have nightmares.

She says that Americans would not be so cavalier about aerial bombardments if they had ever lived through them. I tend to think that she's right.

13. Right to lifers only care about you
when you're in your mother's reproductive tract. Once you're out of there, they lose interest very quickly.
