Turkish TV: Priest's killer says it was to avenge cartoon publication

Elsewhere, the Turkish network, NTV television, reported that a 16-year-old student arrested in connection with the murder of an Italian priest on Sunday had told interrogators he killed the Rev Andrea Santoro to avenge the publication of the cartoons.

Mr Santoro, 60, was shot while praying in his church along the Black Sea coast. Witnesses said the killer screamed "Allahu Akbar", Arabic for "God is great," before firing. Thousands have protested in Turkey against the publication of the cartoons.

4. True, but do the Turkish authorities gain anything from it?

I'd have thought they'd be better off saying he was just a nutter, than getting Turkey involved in the row, with the first direct murder of someone. And the witnesses hearing his cry of "God is Great" do point to a religious motive.

This is getting ridiculous. I was a bit more concerned with it until I saw the fake cartoons, which are so amateurish that any idiot could tell that they were done to incite hysteria.
