I wish I hadn't asked..............
I was at a small birthday gathering for a granddaughter last evening. My son-in-laws folks were present and his mother mentioned during conversation that one of her grandsons (the family tree is all splintered) was being deployed to Iraq this morning. I'd heard that this kid had been kicking around working menial jobs and hadn't gotten a good foothold on anything, so he joined the Marines at the urging of his father, who had also been a Marine. Additionally, a sister of this kid had joined up some time ago.

I asked her out of curiosity what she thought was the main reason for signing up at this particular time, and her reply was "His father told him President Bush needed his help right away, and that was good enough for him".

Also, my daughter's boss' son is shipping over to the MidEast early this week.

I hope these kids come back in one piece.

1. I hope they do too
I will be surprised if they still support Bush wholeheartedly after a tour or two over there, though. Of course, they could, I guess, but how many troops over there are still gung ho Bushites now, I wonder?

2. I think I would of lost it when she said:
"His father told him President Bush needed his help right away, and that was good enough for him". How did you hold your tongue--not to mention your stomach? I wouldn't dream of telling my son something like that, and I was a Marine.

3. I keep thinking about one of my classmates...
He's about 19 and told me he was going to take a break from college and join the National guard. He said he knew he was going to Iraq, but that he didn't see any other way to pay for school. I keep thinking of him... such a young kid with so much promise who didn't think he had many options. I hope he makes it home...

4. It's sad that some people feel like this, but they ARE putting their
family into the fight! No matter how much YOU & I hate Shrub, and what he's done with a war that never should have happened, I have to respect the people who back their beliefs with action. It's a whole lot better than a lot of the damn Pubs in our Gov't who do a lot of yapping in their war support, but you sure won't find any of THEIR relatives in the sandbox!
