John Conyers To Gonzales: Your Answers Have Been"Insufficient" - Calls For NSA Wiretap Hearings
Edited on Fri Jan-19-07 06:11 PM by kpete

Democrats call for NSA wiretapping hearing

Mike Sheehan
Published: Friday January 19, 2007

A key Democrat and members of a House panel he chairs seek a "full briefing" on the Bush administration's controversial domestic eavesdropping.

........................

Conyers describes Gonzales' offer to brief him directly as "insufficient."

The Michigan Democrat also asks to be provided with "copies of the new court orders, under classified cover, so that we may be better informed on the new program." He adds that "a number of important questions remain unanswered."

To illustrate, Conyers writes, "It is unclear whether the FISC issued blanket orders authorizing surveillance for groups or categories of individuals. The Department also has not stated whether the Administration is engaged in any other surveillance or searches, outside the publicly-known NSA program, without judicial review.

"Finally, your own letter restates the Department's position that the initial program was within the law, raising the question of whether the Administration will return to the use of warrantless surveillance at some point in the future," Conyers concludes.

39. No kidding!
After a decade of being shut out of government as the "minority party" we finally have people with the determination and power to lift up the rocks the Republicans have been operating under. Now we'll get to see the dirty details and all around skulduggery the GOP has used to turn our government into the cess-pool it is today.

And I for one couldn't be happier! :woohoo:

38. Why aren't Ganzalez and Rice 'having a chat together' with Cngress...
... rather than having to 'ickily testify' under oath alone.

I can understand freepers who do not want a cosy chat rather than a full accounting. Come on America let's us all get back to Newt's and Tom's non-nastiness!!!

I do believe we are finally witnessing some oversight in action.

I also heard Sen. Leahy promise Gonzo that if within one week the administration does not turn over information concerning the Canadian who was handed over to Syria where he was tortured, there will be a full investigation into the matter.

BRING IT ON, SENATORS!

through Canada, so they can record them all and call them international; and have simply snowed the FISA court. TIA just can not seem to be killed, no matter what.

...it was supported by "the first Muslim to serve in Congress, Keith Ellison (D-MN)." And how is his religion (or lack thereof as the case may be) relevant to the subject at hand? Is the man to be forever identified thusly?

40. The shells are dropping closer to the target
We all know the real question that needs to be asked.

"Has the NSA or any other entity of the Federal Government been directed to, at your or the Presidents' request, to collect intelligence, eavesdrop electronically, or wiretap an individual or group that was deemed a domestic political opponent of this administration?"

The dam will break. It will be perjury, at the very least.

In 2004 phones for Kerry & Democratic organizations in Ohio were hacked,
tapped, and blocked. Some of it was a very sophisticated operation. Computers
were hacked into too.

The fact that it was eliminated shortly after the "Republican Revolution" in '94 may have been the start of the erosion in civil liberties that we all face today. Thank goodness for men like John Conyers.

54. Contempt of Congress and Impeachment of Gonzales, please!
Gonzales just axed a federal prosecutor who convicted Duke Cunningham and was indicting more Reps. Meanwhile, he had hired on, using Arlen Spectre's secret Patriot Act clause, a RNC lawyer who specializes in digging up dirt against Democrats to work for the DOJ doing what Gonzales said last fall that the Justice Department was going to concentrate on in 2007-8----setting up Congressional stings and aggressively prosecuting members of Congress. We all know that means that Gonzales is going to try to get rid of some Senate Democrats, and smear the party before the 2008 election.

Gonzales HAS to go. He is a Mafia enforcer. He should be in Club Fed and he should be disbarred.
