Amsterdam To Dedicate Statue To Prostitutes
You gotta love the Dutch....
http://www.breitbart.com/news/2007/01/16/070116173159.3yvt2yr3.html

snip> "Amsterdam's red light district is reportedly to receive a bronze statue dedicated to prostitutes around the world.

According to the Dutch agency ANP, sculptress Els Rijerse made the statue at the request of a former prostitute Mariska Majoor, who a decade ago founded a centre on prostitution in the Dutch capital.

Majoor was quoted as saying by ANP that the statue would be a first of its kind and that it had received the blessing of the city authorities.

The statue represents a self-assured woman, her hands on her hips, looking sideways towards the sky, and standing on a doorstep, ANP said." <snip

the world's oldest profession should have a monument.

3. This was just the precedent the bush administration was looking for
but once again they fail in their comparison. The prostitutes statue is in honor of women working in a profession. bush and his gang of criminals are leaning more toward a tribute to political whoredom, a profession with absolutely no dignity or honor.

5. assuming you feel this profession holds both diginity and honor
how many of us will suggest to our daughters to become a part of this profession, in all the dignity and honor it seems to be.

6. I don't have a daughter
and my two cents worth on that question are not worth half that. However, if a daughter came to me and said I want to join the young republicans or I want to be a prostitute I'd have a difficult time sorting out the differences.

8. In Pygmalion by GB Shaw
Henry Doolittle says that he has all the morality he can afford.

If the dominant choices were between having the daughter join the military or welfare and legal, organized prostitution would that change the frame of the issue?

Some people and places have different sets of available choices, and different sets of attitudes on sex as profession.

From Classical Greece and Rome to modern states around the world, sex workers do not receive the universal opprobrium they do in highly monotheistic-quasi theocratic societies.

Though in many societies that ban sex-workers, the workers still ply their trade, though with far fewer protections than in places like Amsterdam.

I am not trying to invalidate your observation, but to put it in a larger context, a roomier frame.

16. I don't understand how young women can do this
I'm not saying that they shouldn't be allowed their dignity and I'm not putting them down. I'm just saying that, from the young woman's perspective, I cannot comprehend how she can bring herself to have sex with someone she isn't attracted to for money, especially with those with sloppy bodies, those whose feet stink, those of any age, those with excessively oily hair or acne, those with bad teeth or no teeth, those with forests of nose hair or ear hair, etc. I think I would have to be economically quite desperate to consider this career and with no hope for other employment if I were a young woman and I'd probably only be able to do it if I were stoned out of my mind.
