Iran Claims 40,000 Suicide Bombers Ready to Attack
http://www.talkleft.com/story/2006/04/16/590/23819

The Sunday Times (UK) reports if the U.S. or Britain attack Iran's nuclear sites, they have an army of 40,000 suicide bombers ready to take revenge:

IRAN has formed battalions of suicide bombers to strike at British and American targets if the nation's nuclear sites are attacked. According to Iranian officials, 40,000 trained suicide bombers are ready for action.

The group is called "Special Unit of Martyr Seekers in the Revolutionary Guards."

Dr Hassan Abbasi, head of the Centre for Doctrinal Strategic Studies in the Revolutionary Guards, said in a speech that 29 western targets had been identified: "We are ready to attack American and British sensitive points if they attack Iran's nuclear facilities." He added that some of them were "quite close" to the Iranian border in Iraq.

And some think Bush was trying to minimize terrorism? My biggest fear is he's going to provoke Iran into an excuse to use a nuke.

* Provocation with Iran
* Terrorist attack on us city
* Iran is blamed
* Americans seething at the death of innocent fellow Americans
* BOOM!

:nuke:

Let's not forget WW2 in the Pacific. Okinawa. If there was one single factor that swayed Truman and the adminstration in nuking Hiroshima, it was the "Divine Wind" of the Japanese and the many thousands of Japanese civilians and military who chose death by jumping from the cliffs instead of surrender to the US military.

15. Wow, thats a big ol peck of Homicide Bombers that be Hatin Our Freedoms
The money shot here is "Special Unit of Martyr Seekers in the Revolutionary Guards."

It is the 'State within a State' nature of Iran that really worries me. Their system of government is highly fractured, which probably does not bode well for a reasoned, rational command and control structure within the regular military. Couple that with the Revolutionary Guards, a quasi-military organization who seem to be virtually independent and very well may have an agenda very different from the political 'leadership', and we have all the makings for something that could rapidly spin out of control.

There is not a military solution that is less risky than the status-quo. We need to de-escalate, engage in dialog, and with positive steps forward, normalize relations.

39. Actually does Iran have a strong military?
Seems to me that they were about evenly matched with Iraq and Iraq's military was not exactly world class. So I guess it depends on the meaning of 'strong'.

I think Iran feels incredibly threatened by the huge army next door in Iraq, an army that is in fact world class, an army that comes complete with air superiority, naval support, and nuclear backup in case anything goes seriously wrong on the ground. Their fears are entirely justified.

So we know Ahmadinejad says all sorts of stuff: he appears to be put to use by the Iranian rulers for various purposes, one of which is to utter stuff like this. And we regularly fall apart here every time he says something intended to make us jump up and down. Witness the usual false bravado in this thread, the many 'bring 'em on' type statements.

This is all very real. Our lunatic president just went on national television and threatened Iran with war. The next day our army on their borders attacked their consulate and captured the Iranian staff. We are deploying patriot missiles to Baghdad, the only plausible purpose of which is to defend against Iranian attacks on that city. We are building up our naval forces in the region. Ahmadinejad is replying in kind, warning that Iran does have assets that are non-conventional and that it might indeed be able to retaliate in an asymmetric manner using suicide bombers. It is bluster, but the point of the bluster is that Iran faces a very real threat and is warning us to not push this any further.

Iranian suicide bombers warn U.S., Britain against strike on Iranian nuclear facilities
By: Associated Press
Published: February 19, 2006

A gathering of Iranians who claim they are dedicated to becoming suicide bombers warned the United States and Britain on Saturday of attacks on coalition military bases in Iraq if there were a strike against Tehran's nuclear facilities.

"With more than 1,000 trained martyrdom-seekers, we are ready to attack the American and British sensitive points if they attack Iran's nuclear facilities," said Mohammad Ali Samadi, spokesman of Esteshadion (Martyrdom Seekers). "We have registered more than 52,000 people who willingly are ready to defend their country."

"If they strike, we have a lot of volunteers. Their (U.S. and British) sensitive places are quiet close to Iranian borders," Samadi said after a gathering of about 200 students for a seminar on the suicide-bombing tactics at Tehran's Khajeh Nasir University.

Samadi reviewed the history of the suicide bombing as a weapon, praising it as the most effective Palestinian tactic in their confrontation with Israel.

52. I wish it were "silly" here's more
http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3109053,00.html

The Iranian Movement of Martyrdom Seekers says it has 40,000 "time bombs" ready to attack carry out suicide bombings in Israel and the United States.

"This is our choice and we have no fear," a masked woman told a reporter from Al-Arabiya. "We adhere to the legacy of our late leader, Imam Khomeini."

"There is no God but Allah!" shout a group of women, covered in hijabs, in unison.

"These young women have foresaken the temptations of life, and have chosen the hard way. Indeed, they have chosen martyrdom as a way of liberating Islamic lands," says the Al-Arabiya reporter.

They used to deny the operation existed, now they admit to it, and I don't know of anyone reputable who disputes the figures.

Iranian government officials have long denied media reports about a long suicide bomber recruitment program -- until now.
