Blast rips through U.S. Embassy in Athens

ATHENS - An explosion ripped through the U.S. embassy compound in central Athens on Friday, a police source said.

It was not clear what caused the blast and there was no immediate word on whether there were any casualties.

Police cordoned off all roads around the embassy.

Police officials at the scene said that whatever caused the explosion damaged the official embassy sign outside the mission, but there was little other indication of the extent of damage inside.

I'm sure they're plotting a campaign to refer to any Greek Salad as a "Freedom Salad".

22. Well I did hear one of the talking heads tonight
I think it was Buchanan...say that Iran wouldn't strike us in an obvious place.
And Greece isn't that far from Iran...but we have so many enemies...it is hard to guess who might have done it.

34. new on Reuters article (updating article)
The senior police official did not say whether the explosion was set off inside the compound or whether something might have been thrown into the embassy grounds.

Police officials at the scene said that whatever caused the explosion damaged the official embassy sign outside the mission, but there was little other indication of the extent of damage inside.

29. I visited Athens a couple of years ago
We were on a tour and the guide pointed to a building barely visible behind a tall wall and iron gates. She said it made her sad because it was the U.S.Embasay and it wasn't always such a fortress and the Greek people are not fond of the American policies anymore. :(

but I predict that we will begin to see, in a week or two, "proof" that either Iran, Syria, or forces loyal to them were responsible.

31. MAJOR note for everyone in this thread
If this turns out to be terrorist-related, I want everyone to remember the exact words in these different articles as they are being posted. Screen grabs could be important as well.

Time is of the essence.

Attackers fired a rocket at the U.S. embassy in Athens on Friday but no one was hurt, police and the U.S. embassy said.

Greek anti-terrorist officers were on the scene.

"This was a rocket attack launched from a building across the street. It landed inside a toilet on the third floor of the embassy," a senior police official told Reuters.

"There are no injuries from the blast," a U.S. embassy spokesman said.
