Tweety Tells Tony Snow He Is Best Press Secretary in 50 Years
http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003531830

Doing his part to sell the president's new war plan for Iraq, White House Press Secretary Tony Snow made the rounds of late-afternoon cable news talk show today.

On "Hardball" with Chris Matthews at MSNBC he fielded some frank questions smoothly, if vaguely. He defended Secretary of State Rice calling sending more than 20,000 troops to Iraq an "augmentation," not an "escalation."

Perhaps impressed with his spinning abilities, Matthews bid him farewell with: "You are the best press secretary since Jim Haggerty."

Haggerty, of course, was a legendary press secretary under President Eisenhower in the 1950s.

Then Snow was off to visit Wolf.

Suck Up!

6. All the best press secretaries are named "DeeDee."
We should just start calling him "DeeDee Snow."

8. Well, Jim Haggerty had Eisenhower to work with....
And Ike wasn't much of a president and really didn't have to DO much in the 50s. Except start the process that got us mired down in Nam. But at least Dwight was a war hero.

But Bush? Look what Tony has to work with. Tweety may have a point. And with Snow making himself the lightening rod with his inanities and dumb remarks, it distracts the press (and I used that term loosely) from a lot more of Dumbo's stupidity. A little of it anyway.

But in reality, Snow's a cretin....

9. I didn't see it as sucking up...
I saw it as Matthews saying that Snow is really good at his job: not saying anything and/or spinning for the White House. That's what White House press secretaries do. Depending on your point of view, that can be a compliment or an insult.

14. I agree with you...
I had the feeling that Matthews meant that Snow was the best at spinning. He was spinning so hard, I thought he was going to drill a hole in the ground.

13. Well, yeah. Snow's performance was spot-on.
Edited on Fri Jan-12-07 01:23 AM by Kelly Rupert
Chris Matthews bait-and-switches him on the Senate resolution--first he gets Snow to talk about how discussion and voting in the Senate is a great idea, and then he asks about the impending filibuster of the Reid resolution. Snow then spins that into a mini-speech about the message the resolution sends to the troops, Iran, Syria, North Korea, and the terrorists, and then killed the subject. He turned the message from "Republicans are obstructionist hypocrites" to "Democrats are unwittingly doing the evildoers' bidding" in the wink of an eye. He is an expert in his craft--especially compared to his bumbling predecessor.

To me, Matthews was both paying him lip service as a once-and-likely-future colleague in punditry, and complimenting him on his mastery of spin. It wasn't a compliment of Bush's policies by any means--after all, the truest test of a press secretary is to defend the indefensible.

15. One skunk telling another
that he smells sweet. We live in a world of lies. Bush and his media toadies say "surge" when they know its escalation. "Spin" equals Lies. In a certain sense Matthews is correct. Snow is a damn good liar. Manages to do it with a straight but simultaneously sneering/condescending/supercilious face. Not easy.
