Per CNN: WEBB OPEN TO TROOP SURGE!
Being interviewed by CNN, Webb says he's open to the idea of a troop surge...

TRAITOR! DINO! We'd be better off if he were never elected! With democrats like him, who needs enemies? The only option is complete withdrawal NOW! We have NO room for more LIEBERMANS!

:sarcasm:

Webb did say he was open to considering it, showing that he's not a left-winger (big surprise there). We won't be able to get anything done without moderates. Those demanding ideological purity will get us no where. Where are those who idolized Webb and painted him as a total liberal, ignoring that he was running as a moderate in a conservative state before the elections? Where are they now? How long before Webb becomes the new democratic villain of DU? Not long I'd wager. I disagree with the idea of a troop surge, but I won't be shouting for Webb's head from the rooftops.

5. He actually said that as a TACTIC, he could support a temporary
"surge" or increase as part of a longer term strategy for redeploying the troops out of Iraq.

That nuance will be lost with the headline writers. But it's an important distinction.

Of course, this is not Bush's intentions for the increase (which is now being reported as UNDER 10,000). Bush thinks that it will either win or allow us to stay long enough to run out the clock so that we don't complete the withdrawal until after he is no longer President.

Remember what he said about Vietnam... "you only lose if you leave".

I think once the McCain doctrine (as proposed by Bush) is fully understood, then we will see if Reid and Webb and others are still open to the idea of a surge.

6. I can't imagine anyone ever considering that Webb is a total liberal.
Allen was disgusting and Webb stands up to bush. Webb is also pro-people.

I'm beginning to wonder if some of these Dems are giving bush enough rope to hang himself, so he can't pout and scream "Partisanship!" and "Obstructionists!" From what I've read, all the Dems have some stringent requirements that must be met along with an escalation. I don't think bush can meet their demands, so they will be relieved of any obligations to meet his.

8. And here I thought he'd be the second coming of Dennis Kucinich.
:sarcasm:

You're right, in a conservative state, we're going to see him being a moderate on many/most issues. Perhaps something like Feinstein albeit *slightly* more conservative on some moral issues perhaps.

not your assessment of what Webb said.

18. Post counts are irrelevant to facts.
I've been on DU several years (which is also irrelevant, actually). The interview was on CNN which I'm sure millions saw, and an article, transcript or even video will probably be up soon. The fact is that Webb said he was open to considering a troop surge, not that he supported it.

24. actually...
I don't think Goode believed a word of that email. He was pandering to his base. Remember he represents a part of VA that includes Lynchburg, aka Falwellburg. That doesn't mean what he did was ok. It was still sleazy but I wouldn't call him a bigot. Underhanded in order to protect his job security is more like it.

28. Seems that not everyone in his base thinks like that:

Goode's Office Vandalized With Graffiti: "BIGOT"
By Eric Kleefeld | bio

It looks as if Virgil Goode's attack on Rep. Keith Ellion's use of the Koran for his swearing in hasn't gone over well with at least one of his constituents: Goode's district office in Charlottesville, Virginia, was vandalized. A local paper called The Hook reports that his office window sported a curious new addition: The word "BIGOT" stenciled on it in gold paint. Interestingly, the word was very carefully stencilled on, just under his name and title and in a similar shade of gold, so as to make the word "BIGOT" look almost like an official part of his job description. Asked by the paper if it might be a reaction to his anti-Muslim comments, a Goode spokesperson declined to comment.

Sometimes you hear something and it's not quite what you thought. But I am opposed to the troop surge, and it would be most unfortunate if Webb would even consider it. I am a constituent. I'm going to wait, but he will be receiving a phone call if he even thinks of lending credence to Bush's insane policies.

31. Remember, we had to vote for Dino's so we could have
subpoena power (so we can say we have it?) while impeachment is off the table. Anyone confused yet? And remember, this election wasn't about Iraq (or something like that).
