After six years of neo-fascism holding sway, we need to see some tangible results.

This is your moment, Speaker Pelosi. Please don't let America down.

34. That's the strength of women
Edited on Thu Jan-04-07 05:10 PM by loyalsister
Anthropologist, Helen Fisher, pointed out the fact that women teach language and carry a great strength in language skills. Why wouldn't we?
We may be about to see the most highly skilled speaker in history.

"Women are naturally extremely good with words, and this skill is associated with the female hormones, particularly estrogen. A woman's ability for basic articulation, which is simply finding the right word rapidly, goes up in the middle of the menstrual cycle when estrogen levels peak. But even during menstruation, on average, women are more skilled with language than men are.

And I think this particular talent comes from millions of years of holding a baby in front of their faces, cajoling it, reprimanding it, educating it with words. Words were women's tools for millions of years, and indeed we now finally have a century where the communications industries are expanding rapidly and globally, pulling women into the job market."

AND

"Well, I think it's the first time in history that a very large number of middle-aged women are going to go through menopause (menopause unmasks testosterone and unleashes some extra assertiveness) and also have a very good education, a lot of job experience, a lot of connections, and the savvy to make themselves heard."

The book "The First Sex" is great for any open minded feminist who likes anthropoogy.

Her thoughts are really relevant to this new development!

35. I knew women were naturals in understanding & applying language skills
but the effects of menopause on language ability is news to me. :) Interesting.

I completely agree that we may be about to see the most highly-skilled speaker in history. She's very impressive & obviously capable.

37. Menopause effects assertiveness
Ever notice how in most families, it's the grandma, rather than the grandpa who is running the show?
I didn't link the two pieces very well.
I think the argument is more that women have a biological strength in language capability for a specific purpose- training the new members of species to speak and improve our chances of survival.

During menopause, depletion of estrogen leads to more assertiveness.
If we go beyond what is stated here, I understand this.

I was trying to link it all up implicitly, but here is a more clear articulation of what I think may be implied here.

Despite the fact that that the language strength is tied to estrogen which is depleted, better educated women who have been gaining power over time will maintain the benefits of that original strength through menopause when they becomes more assertive.
I wonder if it is possible that language power and other feminine strengths could benefit our new speaker in ways we may find surprising?

25. Pelosi basks in Congress' historic day
Pelosi basks in Congress' historic day
By ERICA WERNER, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - It's a glass ceiling no one else has even cracked, and Nancy Pelosi was crashing through it Thursday, preparing to be sworn in as the nation's first-ever female House speaker.

"Today we make history. Today we change the direction of our country," Pelosi told supporters at a lunch in the Library of Congress.

(snip)

But the spotlight belonged to Pelosi, and she was making the most of it with a whirlwind of festivities from the lavish to the sentimental. The week was her coming-out to the nation, and she was aiming to introduce herself not just as the San Francisco liberal decried by Republicans, but also as an Italian-American Catholic, mother of five and native of gritty Baltimore, where her father was mayor.

Throughout, the symbolism of her triumph for women was center stage.

(snip)

"This is a historic moment for women everywhere," said NOW President Kim Gandy. "Nancy Pelosi has broken through the marble ceiling."
