I think Carter should have spoken at Ford's funeral
Edited on Wed Jan-03-07 12:42 PM by WI_DEM
because they did become true friends. It is a great story. How two political opponents who did dislike each other buried their differences and became friends when they flew together to Sadat's funeral in 1982. From that point on they cooperated together on various projects and became very friendly with each other as did their wives. I think they were more friendly than Poppy and Dumbya in later years.

I'm sure that unlike Poppy, Carter wouldn't have brought up the JFK assassination.

7. He and Mrs. Carter flew with the Fords to Mich as well.
I think it's more fitting that Carter is speaking today.

3. Poppy just had to rub the country's collective nose in it ...
Just where were you that fateful day, Mr. Bush ... and what was your connection to the CIA at the time?

8. They probably were.
The Fords probably felt it would be more personal to have Jimmy speak today.

9. There is a special bond among Presidents...
there are things than only a President can know, understand or discuss. Ford and Carter had that type of bond. They also apparently shared a mutual disdain for Ronald Reagan.

There have been some other famous examples of this in history, particularly Thomas Jefferson and John Adams, who overcame a deep dislike for each other and became great friends.

Poppy Bush and Bill Clinton now from all appearances also share that bond.

Ronny Reagan had only Nancy to lean on, as he never sought out such a relationship, or perhaps he wasn't accepted by any of the others.

I imagine the current "President" will also face that type of isolation.

10. I don't think that W will face the same fate as Reagan
For one thing, W will be a lot younger than Reagan was when he left office. People will ask him to speak at events, and will ask him to be involved in various charitable causes. He will likely join his dad and Clinton in fundraising for disaster relief, maybe replacing his dad as HW maybe gets too old to do that kind of stuff anymore). Although, a guy who jumps out of airplanes to celebrate his 80th birthday is not aging like the rest of us do to begin with.

I look forward to W's post-presidency, it's got to be better than his presidency.

11. No, I disagree
I think Little Dubby is busily burning bridges as fast as they can be built. Even Poppy will have washed his hands of him by the time he's done. He's as good as poison as far as the Bush name is concerned at this point.
