It's part and parcel of the tendency in our culture to elevate the status (and income) of those who meet our western (often aryan and patriarchal) views of idealised beauty.

Especially when we start talking about being "frightened" by candidates who don't meet an artificial socially constructed standard of beauty.

The concern is not whether you (or other posters here) are shallow or not. The concern is that you're promoting a value system that is alienating, supremacist, and damaging to society as a whole.

These words aren't specifically directed at you, they aren't meant as a personal attack - I recognize this is a very common thing, on DU and elsewhere, to promote candidates or be attracted to candidates based on looks. You just happened to be the person who phrased your response in the form of a question. (probably a rhetorical one, but hey, a question is a question, and thus invites answers.)

I just don't get it. I don't care if a politician looks ugly; it's his or her words that count. Makes me a little sad that so many here seem to be swayed by a pretty face. I thought we were the party of ideas, and that we strive to look behind the surface. This thread sounds like teenagers discussing a boy-band.
