Troop Push Is Personal For McCain
Senator Calls for Iraq Boost as Son Becomes a Marine

Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, December 26, 2006; Page A01

As the Iraq Study Group issued its long-awaited report on the war, declaring that the United States should not dispatch more troops, Sen. John McCain reacted with his long-held and contrary view: It will take more boots on the ground, or the nation faces "sooner or later, our defeat in Iraq."

Then the Arizona Republican discreetly flew to San Diego, where the next day, Dec. 8, he sat under a hot sun to watch a skinny 18-year-old in military-issue glasses graduate from boot camp and become a Marine. His son Jimmy.

John McCain's public certainty about Iraq masks a more private and potentially wrenching connection. If more troops go there, as McCain hopes they will, his youngest son could be one of them, taking his place in a line of family warriors that is one of the longest in U.S. history.

2. I'm not sure if it would have a negative effect on politicians
I am not for a draft, a sane commander in chief would not need one. But I would like to see an intense debate in this country on the need for a draft. A debate which would rule out any deferments (save physical or mental incapacity.) A debate which would target young republicans and test their "patriotism." A debate which would ensure all Americans think really hard before they start waving their flags and urging on an idiot to commit troops to their deaths on the basis of a lie.

And just to piss off the "conservatives" in this country, I'd insist that Gays would be exempt from the draft. Either they would change their minds about gays serving in the military or our "gay" population would quadruple overnight. Mr Mehlman, tear down that closet.

3. No female draftees, either. They haven't bothered to pass the ERA,
so they can forget calling up my gals for ANYTHING.

5. I would make an exception
If you are a flag waving, proud probush, prowar female "patriot" who happened to shout nasty things at liberal veterans who were opposed to the war in November 2002, your ass is going to Fallujah. One would expect such a person to volunteer anyway. Just hasn't gotten around to it.

6. Maybe not the politicians
though do even 10% have children serving? But it would affect the people and remember "we the people...."

7. It would be great if they would listen to we the people
But the regime in Washington has its own agenda and if the people don't agree, they will do it anyway.

8. Okay - everybody enlist. McCain's son needs help to stay alive.

McCain has a point, and thanks to Bush no draft will be necessary.

But in seriousness, the fact some hawks are sending in their own offspring - it is significant.

And if their offspring say they want no special treatment, even better. Even Elvis told his superiors he wanted no special treatment...

10. Final proof that Mc is crazy!
All that shit Rove put out about McCain being screwed in the head from his time as a POW.... it must be true!

Mc has started to believe his own dumbshit rhetoric.... and Dumbya's.

My kid knew that if he tried to enlist, I'd shoot his right big toe off in his sleep. Would have done it, too.

11. There are still several thousand miles
between Marine Recruit McCain and Iraq. There is also a vast difference between serving in Iraq and performing combat operations in Iraq. We need to see the young mans assignment before we say that his father is placing him "in harms way". He could end up as a skivvy-stacker in the Green Zone.
