Macy's pulls Sean John hooded jackets (Dog Fur)
Fri Dec 22, 6:24 PM ET

NEW YORK - Macy's has pulled from its shelves and its Web site two styles of Sean John hooded jackets, originally advertised as featuring faux fur, after an investigation by the nation's largest animal protection organization concluded that the garments were actually made from a certain species of dog called "raccoon dog."

"First these jackets were falsely advertised as faux fur, and then it turned out that the fur came from a type of dog," said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States.

Pacelle added that the issue is an "industry-wide problem" and its investigation demonstrated that retailers and designers "aren't paying close enough attention to the fur trim they are selling." He added that the issue is especially problematic when "the fur is sourced from China where domestic dogs and cats and raccoon dogs are killed in gruesome ways."

5. Is this a domesticated dog?
If it is, I wouldn't mind having one. I like what it looks like.

11. It's not.
It's a member of the Canid family, so is related to dogs, wolves and foxes, but is not domesticated. The Wikipedia article has alot of interesting information. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raccoon_Dog

6. I'm glad they caught it.

So, Mr. Super Glam, Bling-Bling has no
friggin moral conscience, huh?

Not too surprising.

This group has been after the " dog trade"
in several Asian countries.

9. Did you read the article?
Combs said:

"I was completely unaware of the nature of this material, but as soon as we were alerted, the garments were pulled off the Macy's floor and Web site. I have instructed our outerwear licensee to cease the production of any garments using this material immediately."

Do you think he was offered a choice between fake fur and dog fur and said "Dog fur?! Exxxxxcelllent!"

21. Frankly, I don't think he cares.
Of course he's going to cover his butt.

PETA has a lot of support from some people in
the fashion industry- he's not going to buck them.

But Combs has been wearing fur, himself
for quite some time, now.

10. Sadly, under current law, if the fur is valued at less than $150
the manufacturer doesn't have to declare that it is "real" fur.

This loophole allows the sickening trade of dog and cat fur (mostly made in China, of course) to go on. Consumers are buying what they think is faux, but it really comes from dogs & cats that are literally tortured to death.

14. how did you hear about this? do you know what law this is or
have any more details? (i'm not doubting you AT ALL, i'd just like to find out more about it so i can refer to this in some emails to my senators--durbin & obama.)

i was shopping for a winter vest for my daughter and pulled one from the rack only to discover it had "fur" on it. it supposedly wasn't real fur, but i won't buy anything that has fake fur because i feel it only promotes the use of real fur to anyone who sees it. (i'm rambling) i don't want my kid wearing a fake fur collar because i don't want someone looking at her and thinking my daughter feels it's okay to wear fur (fake or real)

anyway, if you have specifics on this under $150 value law i'd love to learn more about it. thanks.

15. Here's a page from HSUS
regarding a House Resolution to require labelling for fur under $150.
