DU is a valuable resource to many members of this community. The fact that we can have open-ended, wide-ranging debates is part of the draw. We have tolerance for diversity and respect for alternative points of view here. We are good progressive liberals who look at all sides of an issue, right?
I'm not trying to be critical with this post, just to make a small point. DU is what it is because Skinner has run it well. He also has an excellent crew helping him. I respect their decisions. I've read the DU rules thoroughly. I respect those rules.
I think it is important to maintain the diversity of opinion available on the forums. I hope the moderators will excercise discretion and make censorship of alternative ideas a rare occurance. That's all.
I want this post to hopefully help keep DU vibrant, with a diversity of opinions and thoughts expressed. I'd hate to see it turned into a homogenized echo chamber where people are afraid to give voice to speculative ideas for fear of censorship.
For the record, I didn't post anything about Tim Johnson, and I'm not one who posts speculative stuff. I'd just like for there to be room for goofball ideas on the boards. Sure, 99% of them make us look wacky, kooky and stupid. But 1% of them could wind up making us look like freaking geniuses down the road, just for thinking outside the box. Is there any argument that censorship stifles creativity?
That's it. My 2 cents, for what it's worth.
