First Lady Fashion Faux Pas: Tale Of 3 Red Dresses

(CBS) WASHINGTON It's always one of the biggest nights in Washington for stars and for glamorous fashion, with guests in the spotlight at an exclusive White House holiday reception. The designer gowns are always scrutinized, and on this year's bash, there was plenty to talk about.

Three women donned the exact same $8,500 red Oscar de la Renta dress, a fashion faux pas in itself. But that's just the beginning of this debacle of ladies in red.

It just so happened that First Lady Laura Bush was wearing the very same dress too.

Letitia Baldridge, Jacqueline Kennedy's Chief of Staff and White House social secretary says the gown was beautiful, but triple the trouble was quite the mess.

2. The dress

"She went upstairs and changed," Baldridge says. "Very easy for her to do. Very, the right thing to do. Take the heat off the other three women."

The first lady's office said the mid-course correction was a first, and that she and the president found it quite amusing.

I wish someone ELSE would make a mid-course correction!

10. Notice something about the pictures.
The guests look very dumpy in their pictures but Pickles looks rather trim. Her face is almost elongated. Do you think they gave her photo a little stretch in the official photo? Looks like it to me. Peace, Kim

31. When I first saw the photo of Pickles with the Chimp
her boobs look like gravity had not been kind. Like she would be knocking her knees with them...But after reading your post...you dont think they would have stretched the photo just a little to make her look thinner, hummm?

16. Laura should put a little more money into her foundation garments.
Her outlook needs a little, shall we say, uplifting.

38. Eight thousand five hundred dollars for THAT?!
And she took it off and will probably never wear it again, and they find that amusing? Why people believe their B.S. about being regular folks continues to be a mystery to me.

That's just insane, no four ways about it. Whoda' thunk that many women would have such horrible taste?

6. So glad that Laura had $8,500 in extra cash
around to pay for that. Jebbie could use a bit of that to pay for some blankets.

At least, that's what happened to my last fashion discussion last year... about "wearing drapes", etc.

18. A design house like Oscar de la Renta
is supposed to make sure that if they sell or make a dress for the First Lady, that no one else that is anywhere near DC ends up with the same dress.

If I was in her position, that would be the last time I would ever buy one of his dresses.

22. Dave Barry's wisdom
In a column he pointed out the difference between men and women. When two women show up at a party wearing the same thing, there's bound to be sparks (not the good kind) of some sort. When two guys show up at a party wearing the same thing, chances are they'll be lifelong friends because they thought it was, "cool."

27. How does that even qualify as a dress?
It's a top and skirt, two separate pieces. And I don't normally join in these discussions because I have no fashion sense at all, but I can say without hesitation that that's one UGLY ensemble. And the "dress" is unattractive too.

"Jacqueline Kennedy, when she was first lady made sure, and her couturiers made sure that nobody else wore that dress that season. "

33. Gee, if they ever
remake THE MUNSTERS, they should give Laura the CAR KILLER, a call..

Actually, what they are wearing is more appropriate for Halloween if you look at it, BLOOD RED to match this Administration. :)

Nice of that designer to sell MANY copies of the same dress as the "first lady"s.. standard republican/corporate think, sell all you can while the selling is HOT, and fuck whatever someone might think, or who might be hurt by it, fashionwise..

Idiots, the whole lot of them, should have been a CIRCUS there, because clowns just don't look right without an elephant in the room, eh?
