Senators Lobby FCC Chief For Local Broadcasting Ruling

(Tuesday, December 5) Six Democratic senators and two Republicans urged FCC Chairman Kevin Martin to complete a proceeding on local broadcasters before embarking on a wider review of limits on media ownership.

Their letter to Martin, a Republican, comes as Democrats prepare to take the reins of Congress Jan. 3 and as Martin faces more oversight by the incoming Democratic chairmen of the House and Senate commerce committees.

Signatories of the letter were: Sens. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif.; Maria Cantwell, D-Wash.; John Kerry, D-Mass.; Frank Lautenberg, D-N.J.; Trent Lott, R-Miss.; Bill Nelson, D-Fla.; Mark Pryor, D-Ark.; and Olympia Snowe, R-Maine.

Noting that the FCC may fold the local broadcasting inquiry into the larger ownership proceeding, the senators warned that "this potential course of action would cause us grave concern." In the so-called localism item, the FCC is exploring whether over-the-air television stations are serving their communities with sufficient regional news and public-interest content.
