Tears, Massive Tears – Nevada Part II (Studio 60)
After watching Studio 60 (which I Tivo) tonite.

Did anyone else watch it?

My transcript:

Judge character (played by John Goodman) : You weren’t protesting at Nellis, you were driving to Nellis, right? Mark Jeeter, he’s your bother?

Jeeter: Yes, sir.

Judge: Older or younger?

Jeeter: He’s my little brother.

. . .

Judge: Mr. Jeeter’s younger brother is a Staff Sergeant with the 820th Road Horse Squadron deployed out of Nellis Air Force Base. You know what Road Horse does? They go to war zones and they build things incredibly fast, the hospital in three days, roads, bridges.

ADA: Is it dangerous?

Judge: You want to go to a Taliban controlled region of Afghanistan right now with an American flag on your shoulder and build a school?

. . .

Judge to Jeeter: “This isn’t his first tour is it?

Jeeter: It’s his third.

Judge: You see, Staff Sergeant Jeeter is just playing Russian Roulette at this point, because you should see what happens to the causality numbers with multiple tours.

I'm crying again. I'm sorry, but our young men and women should not be in Iraq, and Afghanistan has turned into a Narco State.

And I don't know that there's anything I can to do make the situation any better!

The Dems don't take control until Late January, and in the interim, more people will die and the Dems aren't even calling for an end to this "war".

I'm sorry, those lines just brought tears to my eyes - and I don't even have family members in the military.

1. And Goodman delivered them so well
Here a big :grouphug: for you. It was an incredible episode last night. And of course you are right, they shouldn't be there.

2. A couples weeks back Jeeters parents visited Studio 60
The subject was part of that episode as well. The father was upset that while his brother was in harms way, he was playing actor doing humor about the war.
They didn't reveal the brother's role completely

5. That was the episode (and story line) that finally hooked me.

I know it's set in a comedy show, but the less we see of the fictional comedy show's "comedy," the more time we have for "real" story lines and any subsequent comedy/drama that follows.

This is a smart show at heart. It should concentrate on what it does best. Sketch comedy for a network is not its strong suit. (That's a compliment.)

The episode you refer to also had a compelling story line about a black-listed writer for Sid Caesar.

3. Studio 60 is one of my new fave shows.
Boy, they aren't pulling any punches on there. That scene got to me, too.

7. Actually, I think it's a boring show
Granted, it's well written, acted, directed, and produced. But who the Frack cares what happens behind the scenes at SNL? I only Tivo it for Aaron Sorkin's writing. Just sayin'.

9. I like the characters.
It's not so much the show as the people. I like how they all interact and then deal with difficult subjects. They yell and get over it, they deal with consequences, and it's fun to watch. It's like how West Wing used to be only edgier.

12. A Friend pointed that out to me
He also pointed out the Aaron Sorkin was a better writer before he stopped smoking pot. Just sayin'

For the record - I stopped smoking weed at 18.

8. Maybe I'm stating the obvious, but those kids will never live again.
It's one thing to die for a just cause, another to die for a lie.

Meanwhile, back in lalaland, Sorkin is an amazing writer. I appreciate Studio 60 but really miss The West Wing. I'll take my Sorkin fix any way I can get it.

I Tivo's the ep from Monday and am really looking forward to watching it, esp after reading what you wrote.

10. I'm a Studio 60 fan. I was drawn in because of Sorkin but have
stuck around because they actually have intelligent "discussions" about issues that are so relevant today. They have "kicked" around Christians from the beginning while giving a voice to an actor who is deeply religious and able to give her position without making her a saint or a wacko. They discuss the war in a way that shows many, many good and decent Democratic people hate the war but love the soldier - pretty good in a day and age when you have a president telling everyone that Dems are satan's minions and Al Queda cheerleaders.

I sorely miss West Wing but am finding that Studio 60 is a good, fast-paced show to fill that void. I just hope that the show hangs in there and lets an audience build. Intelligent writing, sharp, witty dialog, well casted actors and a honest debate on many issues is a nice counterbalance to pap like the reality shows, another repug talking head show or a lame game show.

14. Can you explain to me what just happened with Tom Jeter? I'm a
little slow on the uptake sometimes...why did the judge dismiss the case? Why was Tom speeding? Thanks.

16. Jeter was speeding to go see his brother before he deployed for his
third tour in Iraq. Jeter didn't want to use his brother's military service as an excuse to get out of a speeding ticket. The judge, realizing that Jeter wasn't just some Hollywood liberal thumbing his nose at the law was just trying to see his brother and dismissed charges. Was it legal, probably not, but the John Goodman character had already been established as not exactly a straight up legal eagle and full of surprises.

Great story line and funny as hell while still pushing them "damn Hollywood liberal" points of view. Hate the war love the soldiers shtick make repugs' heads explode. Always entertaining!

*Hope this answer isn't too late.
